Matthew Thompson (born August 18, 1982 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian football (soccer) player. He currently plays as a leftback for A-League club Newcastle United Jets, although his favoured position is in midfield.

Matt scored a wonder goal against Central Coast Mariners in Leg 2 of the 2005-06 Semi-Finals. He again showed his penchant for the spectacular in Round 20 of the 2006-07 season scoring a contender for Goal Of The Year against Adelaide United. Matt Thompson was one of three players to be the first to play 50 A-League games.
