[edit] Character history

Matt was raised as the son of Julia and Sean McNamara, although his biological father is Christian Troy, a man he regards as an uncle. Matt has one younger half-sister, Annie and a younger half-brother, Conor. He is approximately 16 years of age at the beginning of the show's first season.

[edit] Season one

From the start of the show, Matt's life is in a downward spiral. In the first season, he attempts to circumcise himself. Later in the season, his mother catches him engaging in a threeway with two girls from his school. Soon after, Matt, along with his friend Henry (Andrew Leeds), commit a hit and run while under the influence of marijuana.

[edit] Season two

During the second season, Matt's integrity becomes questionable. He manages to avoid becoming a suspect in the hit and run incident through a series of lies. Later, Matt discovers that Christian, not Sean, is his biological father. This situation sends Matt into a rebellious stage. He spends a majority of the season in a romantic relationship with Ava (Famke Janssen) , a woman 20 years his senior. Eventually, Sean and Julia find out Ava had once been involved in an incestuous relationship with her son, Adrian (Seth Gabel); Christian also discovers that Ava is an MTF transsexual who underwent extensive surgery to change her gender. The three of them initiate a plan to get Ava out of Matt's life. They succeed and by the end of Season 2, Matt does not know Ava had once been a man.

[edit] Season three

During the third season, Matt's rebellious behavior becomes more disturbing. When Sean reveals Ava's past to Matt, he expresses a possible sexual fetish for transgender women. Unfortunately, Matt's lack of knowledge in such people (and their various states of alteration) causes his behavior to transcend from irresponsible to violent. He savagely beats a transexual woman after discovering she still has a penis. After the incident, Matt shaves his head, dramatically altering his appearance. The woman and her friends later attacked him in revenge. In the following episode, Matt and Sean engage in an argument which turns violent, and Sean punches Matt. As a result, Matt files a restraining order against Sean. The court order is later dropped, but Sean and Matt continue to be on bad terms.

Matt continues his rebellious behavior by getting involved with Ariel Alderman, a girl who is racist. The relationship dissolves when Matt realizes Ariel has serious emotional problems and he tries to discuss it with her father. Her father chastises Matt, but Matt stands his ground. Christian commends Matt on his standing up to Ariel's father, and Matt admits he never did agree with her racist theories of society. With neither having any place to go, Christian and Matt share Christmas Eve together at Christian's apartment where they reflect on how they are both adjusting to their respective situations.

During the final third season episodes, Cherry Peck (the transgendered woman that Matt beat up) comes to McNamara and Troy to get her face repaired. A Vietnamese back-alley surgeon had botched a reconstruction surgery after the beating. She is denied, Sean telling her that since she beat Matt up, she will not get a surgery. Later, Sean tells Matt of the incident and Matt convinces Sean to perform the surgery on Cherry. Matt visits Cherry in the recovery room and they have a heart-to-heart about what happened between them. Apologies are made and all is well. Matt offers to take Cherry shopping for new make-up.

While at the department store, Cherry is insulted by a sales lady. Things go from bad to worse when Ariel Alderman spots the two together. She begins a verbal attack on Matt, only stopping to go and tell her father about what she has seen. Ariel further confronts Matt in their school's parking lot, asking him what Cherry has that she doesn't. After making a scene in public, she coaxes Matt into her car. They are then joined by Ariel's father.

Ariel drives Matt back to her house, where he is forced inside and to the basement by Mr. Alderman. Cherry Peck is then brought into the basement, roughed up and bound to a chair next to Matt. After Ariel ties Matt up to a chair and puts make-up on him, Cherry mentions that Ariel's father has a gun. Ariel tells her father that this wasn't the plan; they were only supposed to scare Matt and Cherry, not hurt them. Mr. Alderman advises Ariel to go upstairs, which she does. Left alone with Matt and Cherry, Ariel's father says that he wants to play a little game with them. He wields a box-cutter and plans to cut off the penis of whichever of the pair makes a prettier girl. He decides on Matt, but Cherry saves Matt from having to cut his own penis off, telling him to do it to her. Cherry assures Matt that it's alright, and after being threatened at gunpoint by Mr. Alderman, Matt does (presumably) cut Cherry's penis off.

Later they are transported to a remote location, where Matt is forced to partially bury Cherry alive. Mr. Alderman brandishes a gun and tells Matt to shoot Cherry. Matt refuses, walking away. He says that he doesn't care anymore, that Mr. Alderman can go ahead and kill him. While Mr. Alderman watches Matt, Cherry rises out of her grave and hits him over the head with a shovel. Cherry gets the gun, and Matt urges her to shoot Mr. Alderman. The scene ends with the gun pointed off-camera and Cherry firing.

Matt then returns home, despite Sean telling him that it's boring there right now. Matt responds with, "I could use a little boring right now."

[edit] Season four

At the beginning of Season Four, Matt is on antidepressants and undergoing counselling after the events of season 3. For his birthday, Sean and Julia get him a membership to a local gym in hopes that he will get out and start meeting people again as opposed to hanging out and smoking pot in the garage or hanging around shady people like Ariel. While hesitant at first, Matt decides to give the place a try and encounters Kimber at the gym. He marvels at how good she looks after everything that happened to her, and she talks to him about how he is dealing with what has happened to him. She convinces him to ditch his medication and therapy by showing him the benefits of Scientology. Matt later asks Christian and Sean if they would use the money for the medicine and therapy for Scientology, but they are hesitant to do so. Matt eventually approaches Julia, who gives him the money because, in addition to him being able to get the money and do whatever he wants regardless of what his parents say, if he believed it would help him then they should be supportive of his choice.

He is currently on bad terms with his biological father Christian because he's not supportive of his choices and doesn't like his relationship with Kimber (whom Christian considers an emotional vampire). In order to try to bribe Matt away from Scientology, Christian convinces Sean to pool money together and get Matt a nice car under the guise of rewarding him for turning himself around after the incidents with Ariel and Ava. However, Kimber convinces Matt that Sean and Christian are bribing him and coerces him to move out of his house and away from his parents. Enraged and convinced that Kimber and her Scientology companions have brainwashed Matt, Sean and Christian hire a man to remove Matt from Kimber's clutches and try to break the hold she has on him.

Matt has sinced married Kimber who has now become pregnant, which according to Christian is simply for Kimber to get back at him. Christian extracted DNA from her uterus while Kimber was getting her implants removed to prove that the baby is his, however the results came back stating that Christian was the child's grandfather, making Matt the father. However, in the season four finale, Matt reveals to Sean that he believes Kimber is still in love with Christian, and is clearly upset by this.

[edit] Season five

Matt has a daughter named Jenna with Kimber. He recently appeared in Los Angeles claiming he left Kimber to move to Los Angeles and be with his father and try and make it on his own. He further claimed he brought daughter Jenna with him after Kimber declared him a suppressive. Stating Kimber had given away all their money, Matt takes money from Christian and Sean saying he needs to get a job and do what he can to support baby Jenna and himself. Unbeknown to Christian and Sean, Kimber is with Matt in Los Angeles but has a meth habit that Matt's money has financed. The money he's borrowing from Christian and Sean is to feed that habit. Desperate for money to feed Jenna, and Kimber's meth habit, Matt agrees to do gay porn with the company who used to promote Kimber. Kimber arrives on set the moment before Matt was to perform and tells him she fixed everything and to come home. Matt finds out that Kimber is then sleeping with their drug dealer. Later Kimber wishes to relive her porn star days and makes a deal with Christian. Christian performs plastic surgery on Kimber in exchange for her leaving Matt. Kimber agrees without hesitation and returns to her porn career; although not before telling Matt that she never loved him and that he was going nowhere fast. Kimber then leaves with their daughter (Jenna). Distraught, Matt goes to see Christian and is faced with getting his life back together on his own. Matt returns home and attempts to make more meth which accidentally starts a fire in the apartment; his shirt catches fire and he leaps off the second story balcony into a pool. While in burn recovery, Matt attempts to make peace with Sean, which he declines, convinced that he needs to end his dependence on his family. Later he befriends Rachel his physical therapist who had been horribly disfigured by a suicide bombing in Israel. They briefly date but she dumps him because she doesn't find him attractive. He then sleeps with Emme who had been a patient of Christian's who had come to him to fix her face which was also disfigured. After they have sex Emme mentions that she had met her father that day and he was none other than Christian. She claims to be Christian's daughter from a one night stand he had with a woman from Georgia. Matt and Emme consider dating despite being half-siblings but Emme moves back to Georgia and Matt breaks off their relationship.

[edit] Future

In "Conor McNamara 2026" Matt has become a successful plastic surgeon and carries out an operation on his half brother to fix his hands. Kimber and his daughter are not seen nor mentioned.
