Matt Dunne is a former two-term Democratic Vermont State Senator who represented the Windsor senate district. Dunne ran for Lieutenant Governor of Vermont in 2006. When Rep. Bernie Sanders announced that he would not run for re-election to the US House, Dunne briefly considered a run for Vermont's sole seat in the U.S. House of Representitives in 2006. However, when then Vermont State Senator Peter Welch announced his intention to run for the same seat, Dunne ended his brief campaign and decided instead to run for Lieutenant Governor. He formerly was the Director of AmeriCorps VISTA, appointed first by President Bill Clinton and then re-appointed by President George W. Bush.
He served eight years in the Vermont House of Representatives immediately out of college, and was chosen by the Democratic caucus in 1998 to be Assistant Majority Leader, at the time the youngest whip in the country. Following two-and-a-half years overseeing AmeriCorps VISTA, Matt was elected to the Vermont State Senate. He sat on the Appropriations, Economic Development, and Administrative Rules Committees. He was previously Assistant Director of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy at Dartmouth College. Dunne lost the race for Lieutenant Governor of Vermont to Republican incumbent Brian Dubie (51-45%).[1]
An alumnus of Brown University and Hanover High School, Dunne has also been involved with theatre, directing community dramatic productions in both Vermont and New Hampshire.
