It is the life Matt's always wanted; convinced he's lighter than air, and can be close to his deceasesd father, who also lived to fly. When he was fourteen years old, he meets a dying balloonist on a wrecked balloon who speaks of beautiful creatures drifting through the skies. But Matt thought it was untrue. A year later, Matt meets the balloonist's granddaughter, Kate de Vries, and he realizes that the balloonist's ravings may have been true, and that the creatures are real. After being shipwrecked by sky pirates, he and Kate sneak off and find the bones of the creature, and discoveres that they are on the same island where Kate's grandfather first saw the creatures, which they would later name cloud cats. On their third journey through the forest, they are found by pirates and forced to lie about their whereabouts. They escape, but are enventually discovered, and Matt tries to do everything he can to stop the pirates, save his crewmates and passengers, and fly the Aurora.

[edit] Role in Skybreaker

The control car of the giant airship is almost entirely encased in ice, the ship’s name barely visible on her tattered skin: Hyperion. Matt Cruse can’t believe his eyes. Can this really be the legendary lost craft, now a frozen coffin to a ghostly crew and a vast treasure? At 20,000 feet, aboard a decrepit training ship, Matt is almost unconscious from the high altitude, but of all the oxygen-starved crew, he alone remembers the Hyperion’s coordinates. Suddenly it seems that everyone is after those coordinates. Kate de Vries, Matt’s rich, young lady friend, has her reasons. But what about the strange gypsy girl and the handsome captain who’s going to pilot them back to the Hyperion? In an adventure that will test his courage, his skill and his heart, Matt is about to take off on the ride of his life.
