Matisse was originally formed in 1997 but only started performing and writing songs in January 1999. Matisse have supported many acts including Reamonn, Puressence, Shed Seven, The Frank and Walters and Drugstore. They continued their live performances for two years after which they signed a contract with Sony BMG in 2001. In the winter of 2002, they began their recordings for the album "4", which was released in the summer of 2003.

[edit] 2005-2006

Two years after the "4" in June 2005, Matisse released their debut album "Cheap As Art" which hit the #3 spot on Pop & Rock magazine's "best of the year list"[citation needed]. The lead single of the album is the song "She Smiles". A few days after the release of their debut, Matisse opened the first day of the Rockwave Festival. In December 2006, they took a break from recording their third LP album "Toys up", and they supported the Kaiser Chiefs on their Greek tour. In 2007, Aris Siafas left the band for personal reasons. He was replaced by Alex, a Greek-Australian singer. The band rereleased "Toys Up", includind this time a deluxe edition of videos, remixes, as well as a new mix from their cover on Cindy Lauper's song "She Bob".
