Matis Weinberg

Rabbi Matis Weinberg is an American-born Orthodox rabbi and former rosh yeshiva who now resides in Jerusalem, Israel. He is a lecturer and educator and travels to teach groups in different parts of the world, such as in the United Sates and South Africa. He is the author of numerous books on Jewish texts. He is related to the Weinberg family, who have been central to 20th century Orthodox Judaism in the United States.

He is the former Dean at the Hebrew Institute of California and Rosh Yeshiva of Kerem Yeshiva, in California.


Weinberg was at Yeshivat Kerem in Santa Clara, California in the early 1980s when he was run out of town by Jewish authority Rabbi Elya Svei, following allegations of abuse. Also according to news reports, Svei ordered Weinberg to sign a letter guaranteeing that he would never again teach children.

Weinberg's magnum opus is a series of books of discourses and discussions on the Torah, under the title Frameworks. He is currently extending the series to discuss the Jewish holidays, with only the first volume and second volume, on Rosh Hashana and Chanuka respectively, published.

Weinberg is the son of Rabbi Yaakov Weinberg, long time rosh yeshiva and head of the Yeshivas Ner Yisroel until his death in 1999 and grandson of Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman. He is the nephew of Aish HaTorah dean Rabbi Noach Weinberg.
