Mathgamain mac Cennétig
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mathgamain mac Cennétig (died 976) was king of Munster.
Mathgamain was the son of Cennétig mac Lorcáin of the Dál gCais. His father died in 951 and is called king of Tuadmumu in the report of his death, and was probably succeeded by Mathgamain's brother Lachtna, who died in 953 and is not given any distinguishing title at his death.
By 967, Mathgamain is being called "king of Cashel", a synonym for king of Munster, by the Annals of Ulster. According to the later king lists, he was king after the death of Donnchad, son of Cellachán Caisil, in 963, the first non-Eóganachta king of Munster.
Mathgamain was captured by the Norse Gaels of Limerick in 976, and handed him over to an enemy, Máelmuad mac Brain of the Eóganacht Raithlind, who had him killed.
His descendants were known as the Úi Mathgamna and should not be confused with the Dál Fiatach sept of similar name.
