Mathauda

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathauda is a Jatt gotra or clan in the state of Punjab in India.

The history of the Mathaudas (also spelled as Mathoda) is largely unsure. Vocal tradition suggests that the Mathaudas are a Jatt people of Greek descent. It is hypothesized that the name is a variant of 'Macedon', perhaps altered over generations as ancestors of Greek descent attached the name of the Greek province to their own.

It is possible that the Mathaudas traveled to India along with Alexander's army. Further research on this name is necessary. They are a feisty, courageous and physically strong people who are known to have an independent streak.

Mathauda's primarily hail from the Ropar district of the Indian Punjab. It is possible that they may reside in villages in Rajasthan as well.
