Mater Dei Catholic High School is a private, Roman Catholic high school in Chula Vista, California. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. Mater Dei Catholic replaced its former school, Marian Catholic, in September 2007. The rebuilding/renaming came as a result of the Diocese's decision to upgrade all of its secondary campuses in the last five years.

Marian Catholic was established in 1960. It was the first Catholic co-ed high school in the Diocese.[1] The school mascot is the Crusader.

[edit] Athletics

Marian Catholic/Mater Dei has had notable athletic successes in its history. School teams have won 19 San Diego CIF titles [2].

[edit] Volleyball

The 1979–1981 girls volleyball team won three consecutive SD-CIF Div 2A titles. The 1979 team placed 3rd in state and the 1980 team finished in second place. Three members of those teams were awarded SD-CIF Player of the Year: Julie Baker (1979), Susan Compton (1980) and Alisha Eishen (1981 and 1982). They won the Metro division six straight years, from 1979–1984. The volleyball team still holds the section record for consecutive wins (46) from 1980 until 1982.[3].

The Crusaders boys football teams won the Division 1A championship in 1988, Division IV champions in 1998–1999 and Division III championships in 2002–2003. The 2003 team set the CIF record for points in a season with 713. They won 27 consecutive games between 2002 and 2004. Standouts include Stanley Daniels (2002), Mickey Pimentel (2003) and Patrick Gates (2004),

  • Susan Compton (1981). SD-CIF Girls Volleyball Player of the Year (1980). NCAA Tournament First Team selection (1984), with Stanford University.
  • John Carlos Frey (1981), film director and actor.
  • Jesse Rodriguez (1969). Former Superior Court judge (1989–2003). Currently he is the Assistant District Attorney for San Diego County.
  • Mary Salas (1966). Assembly member, 79th District California.
  • Robert Clark Young (1978). Author of novels, essays, and short stories; anti-war activist; former editor of the Marian High School Page.
