Ma’had atTarbiyah al-Islamiyah or commonly known as MATRI is the one and only premier private religious school in Perlis. Founded in 1987 by alFadhil Dato' Kaya Bakti Ustaz Dahlan Mohd. Zain, MATRI recently celebrated its 2 decades of existence in 23th, 24th and 25th of May 2008 with the coming of over 10,000 visitors from all over Malaysia including VIPs and VVIPs. The Menteri Besar, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Seri Dr. Md Isa Sabu was expected to come to this grand celebration. MATRI is always regarded as "The Eton College for the Islamic World".

MATRI is located in Tunjung Village, Beseri, Perlis in Malaysia. Situated nearby a rubber plantation, MATRI is surrounded by amazing greenery view with hills and mountains as a stuning background. This 16.2-hectare-school can be reached by road 14 kilometres from Kangar, the capital of Perlis.

Started with 17 students (8 boys and 9 girls) at the earlier stage of Marhalah Khassah (Pre-University), MATRI was founded in 7 Zulhijjah 1407 Hijriah / 20th August 1987. Administered by alFadhil Dato' Kaya Bakti Ustaz Dahlan Mohd. Zain with his committees, educational programs in MATRI is arranged from 5.30a.m. till 11.00p.m. Students in MATRI is educated, trained and shaped into a perfect Muslim youths. Since it has limited capacity for students, entries to MATRI is based on availability and permission from the school’s Administration Body. Every year, MATRI has to reject hundreds of students' application to MATRI due to limited space. Currently, there are 817 students studying in this school with 34 classes altogether in 2008.

[edit] Facilities

At the earlier stage of MATRI, the facilities only consisted of a block that is known as the “surau” (praying area). At the ground floor of the main block held the classes, library, school office and administration, teachers’ lounge and rooms as well as the headmaster’s room. At the second floor lays the rest of the classes and the praying hall. In 1990 a new hostel for boys and girls was built. In 1994, the facilities in MATRI were added with a new 3-storey block. The second and the third floor of the new building classes were placed for Form 1 to Form 5 students. The first floor used to be an extra hostel for Form 1 and Form 2 students. Facilities in MATRI is perfected again with second girls’ hostel, temporary dinner hall, football field, netball court and table tennis facilities. In 26 March 1996, block A girls’ hostel that was connected to the main block was in fire. The main block, however survived the fire. To settle the lack of students’ accommodation, new hostels for both boys and girls are built in 1996. Today, MATRI has a new 4-storey academic block, which makes altogether 4 academic blocks. With a large library, 2 science laboratory, 34 classes, PEKA room, lobby, huge praying area or musolla (which regarded as mosque in Friday), 7 large fields, 2-storey dining hall, canteen, shops, open squares, workshops, 3 hostel blocks (which accommodate over 800 students), and Multimedia room, students can enjoy the top-of-the-list and state-of-the-art education system served in MATRI.

There are five houses in MATRI. All the houses have their own Housemaster that is in charge of their respective house. All the five houses have their own house colour and mascot. Scores for each house are collected through different competitions throughout the year. At the end of the year, the best House will be announced and rewarded by the headmaster. The five competitive houses are:

  • Badar House
  • Uhud House
  • Qadisiyyah House
  • Khaibar House

MATRI is well-known in Perlis for its amazing and excellent result to be the amongst the top in Perlis in Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). There many of the students that managed to proceed their study to the United Kingdom. Some of them even managed to go to Germany, Russia, Korea, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Yaman and other Middle East countries. For Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia or STAM, MATRI used to be amongst the best in Malaysia. STAM result recently shows that 60% of the STAM candidates managed to score Mumtaz or A.

In co-curricular activities, MATRI proved to be best nationwide. In sports, MATRI Hockey Team is well-known to be the champion of Perlis so as the MATRI Volleyball team and the MATRI Ping Pong Team. Some of them were selected to represent Perlis to compete in the National level. A hockey player from MATRI inh 2007 managed to represent Malaysia in a international hockey competition in Germany. MATRI also involved in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL), For marching competition, the School's Youth Cadet or Kadet Remaja Sekolah (KRS) of MATRI is the 8-time-champion of Perlis. The Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (Red Cross Association) or PBSM of MATRI also managed to be the champion in 2008. Not to mention, the success of Kadet Bomba dan Penyelamat or the Fire and Rescue Cadet MATRI who managed to be the first runner-up for three years straight. The MATRI marching squad through PBSM Perlis contingent won the third-place in the National Level Open Marching Competition organised by the Malaysia Youth Body (MBM).

In Hari Pendidikan Islam (Islamic Education Day) especially in the north education zone of Perlis, MATRI is well-known to be the champion in Syarahan (public-speaking), Hafazan (memorizing), and Tilawah (reciting) al-Quran. For Maal Hijrah, the public speaker for MATRI also proved to be the champion of Perlis. In the Majlis Hafazan al-Qur'an, candidates from MATRI won the first place in 5 juzu' (5 chapter) category and therefore represent Perlis in the National competition for two years straight. In the English Ala-parliamentary debate competition, in 2006, the MATRI debate team managed to be the first runner-up in the state level. In 2007, the Malay Ala-Parliamentary Debate Team of MATRI managed to place themselves amongst the quarter-finalists of the zone.

MATRI until today manages to produce many charismatic students, intellects, scholars, leaders, technocrats and dedicated workers of their fields.
