Description

juvenile foliage of a Mataī, Prumnopitys taxifolia, Podocarpaceae. Endemic to New Zealand. The juvenile Mataī is a shrub consisting of a tangle of slender, flexuous, divaricating branchlets interspersed with occasional brown, pale yellow, or dirty white leaves. The juvenile stage may last many years, until at last the adult form begins to grow out of the top of the shrub; then the divaricating branches atrophy and drop away.
