[edit] Re: Richard Dawkins FA candidacy

Hello M2000. I'm quite saddened that the Richard Dawkins page was not accepted for FA status. I have since been looking around at other FAs, and it seems to be better than quite a lot of them. It cannot be far from the required standard. I'll continue to try to iron out any faults I see, but I cannot find much wrong with it! AC+79 3888 (talk) 21:49, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello AC+79 3888. Yes, it is not far from the required standard. It will achieve FA status someday. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 02:51, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

I, too, am baffled as to why "Richard Dawkins" was not promoted to FA. After I had done some copyediting a couple of weeks ago, I thought the article was ready. In fact, I was so irritated by the trivial changes some people kept making that I stopped following what they were doing, confident that it would pass in spite of them. How soon can the nomination be resubmitted? Nihil novi (talk) 05:07, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, I will see the article tomorrow. Masterpiece2000 (talk) 13:18, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] TH3

Why do you think the TH3 article should be deleted?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.94.104.121 (talk) 20:30, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Because it was a non-notable article. Masterpiece2000 (talk) 13:18, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edits to Richard Dawkins

Hello, Masterpiece. Regarding edits to Richard Dawkins, I agree that religion should be mentioned in the lead, but I feel that the word is overused in the opening couple of paragraphs, and it does not read well as a result.

Specifically here:

He has since written several best-selling popular books, and made regular appearances on television and radio programmes discussing evolution, creationism, intelligent design, and religion. In addition to his biological work, Dawkins is well-known for his views on organised religion. He is an outspoken antireligionist and atheist;[3] a secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist,[4] and a supporter of the Brights movement.[5]

Perhaps we could alter it to a different word in a couple of the cases. Maybe "faith", or something similar?

Regards.AC+79 3888 (talk) 13:15, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, I don't think the word is overused. The word religion is used two times. One is about antireligion. I don't think it would be apporpriate to use faith. What's your view? Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 13:22, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
I also feel that we should call Dawkins an antitheist. The term antireligionist is not common. It might be accurate to call him an antitheist. He is an opponent of theism. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 13:31, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I fully agree. That would solve it. Antitheism is an appropriate term. Thanks. AC+79 3888 (talk) 14:56, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
"Antitheism" is a good, much under-used word that has not yet become fraught with bigoted emotion. Nihil novi (talk) 20:19, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok! The problem is solved! Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 06:31, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Do either of you know how soon it can be re-submitted? I would like to do so. AC+79 3888 (talk) 11:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
AC, I think we should wait for a week. There are still some flaws in the article. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 12:02, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, sure, I agree. It has improved a lot in the past week but there's still more to be done. Regards. AC+79 3888 (talk) 12:44, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

M2000, thanks for the comment. I wasn't aware that it should be the name of a person, but I will bear that in mind for future editing. I will try to check all the references on the Richard Dawkins article over the next few days, we are getting there slowly but surely. Regards.--AC+79 3888 (talk) 09:34, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Professor Sir Michael Rutter

Can you tell me why the title is changed to just Michael Rutter from the body of the text when this is his official title legitimately earned?

Many thanks

KingsleyMiller (talk) 23:20, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, KingsleyMiller, it is unnecessary to mention 'Professor'. For example, Richard Dawkins is a Professor. We don't mention in the title that he is a Professor. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 03:56, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Professor Sir Michael Rutter2

Dear User:Masterpiece2000,

I am sorry to say that I do not see Richard Dawkins as an accepted authority for this edit.

Can you cite your authority please?

kipKingsleyMiller (talk) 18:00, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

KingsleyMiller, we don't put "Professor" in the title. You can see the biographies of John Bowlby, Simon Baron-Cohen, etc. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 06:38, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Professor Sir Michael Rutter3

Hello KingsleyMiller. How are you? We don't put "Professor" in the title. You can see other similar biographies. For example, see the biography of Simon Baron-Cohen. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 06:54, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Dear Masterpiece2000,

I am not quite sure what you are saying. The dispute was over the inclusion in the text. You have removed the word from the main body of the text.

Who is 'we'?

KingsleyMiller (talk) 07:28, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

'We' means Wikipedians. Please look at other similar biograpies. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 08:03, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I became confused. I am not an expert on Michael Rutter. You should have included this website in the article. That would have helped other users. It's a website of KCL and it calls him "Professor Sir Michael Rutter". I have made necessary changes. You can see the biography. I hope everything is alright. [edit] Rationalism / Richard Dawkins

Hello M2000. Thanks for your suggestion. I have added the Rationalist Userbox to my page. I think that the Richard Dawkins page is almost Featured Article level, I'd just like to wait for the Peer Review to be completed. It shouldn't be too long until someone takes a look at it. Thanks for the reply. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 04:53, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Hi M2000.

I really think that the Richard Dawkins article is FA status at this point. The person who did the peer review for me said he thought it was "a very strong article". I know it has not been long since the last review, but so much has changed in the article since then. AC+79 3888 (talk) 19:47, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for that, M2000. Regards. AC+79 3888 (talk) 17:57, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
I have removed the last paragraph in the lead. I think that it probably was unnecessary. Regards. --AC+79 3888 (talk) 15:15, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
It's not looking too good :(. People seem to have very high standards for this article. I have seen FAs that are nowhere near as good! AC+79 3888 (talk) 19:59, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I don't know. I think the sources do suggest that he is outspoken and an antitheist. For example in the citations, this one says:

his famously virulent views on religion, attacking it as a "virus of the mind" and an "infantile regression".

and this one:

RICHARD DAWKINS, the British scientist who has become the high priest of atheism, is launching a crusade in America to win new recruits to the church of nonbelievers.

...but if you think it works better without them, I'm OK with that. I don't think it's very important. Thanks, AC+79 3888 [ talk ] 07:56, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

M2000, that's fine, I see your point. It is not necessary to include those words in the text. Thanks, AC+79 3888 [ talk ] 13:12, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the note. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 13:59, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

He may have delivered those lectures, but what exactly does a list of names like that actually add to the article or to the understanding of the reader? [edit] Richard Dawkins FAC

I understand that the FAC process can be pretty stressful, with all the reviews pouring in and each reviewer seemingly demanding that the article be molded to his/her taste. Typically FAC reviewers do not edit the article they are critiquing because of both time and neutrality concerns. May I suggest that you contact people on the related projects (WP:EB, ID etc.) to ask for help in reviewing the article and also responding to other reviewers' comments ? It may also be a good idea to leave a note on the FAC page that the concerns are in the process of being addressed - that way the FA director is unlikely to close the FAC as dormant. Cheers. [edit] Richard Dawkins

Hi, I responded on my talk page, but maybe we can continue to discuss what to do about that section here. The length of it was one reason I couldn't whole-heartedly support the FA.

I will certainly not revert back to my own version, but don't let your shock of seeing so many sources disappear be the sole judge of what makes it a better article. Something being a reliable source, even a good piece of information, doesn't necessarily improve the article. I think the current version is a painful read, and the backward-forward argumentation there is not in tune with the rest of the article.

Cheers, Merzul (talk) 14:16, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and I should apologize, I noticed you had to spend some time cleaning up and restoring subsequent edits. I'm very sorry for that. Next time I make such an edit I will self-revert and post a link to my version on the talk-page. Thanks for cleaning up, Merzul (talk) 14:24, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Secular humanist

Here's the symbol for humanism. I thought you might want to display it on your user or talk page.

Thank you for the advice on joining the humanism category. I'd really like to meet more humanists, and so I've joined. I wouldn't have if you hadn't suggested it. Thanks.

By the way, I just noticed that there isn't a Wikipedia:WikiProject Humanism. If you were to create it, I would certainly join.

Hey Trans! I was thinking about Wikipedia:WikiProject Humanism!! How do you read the mind of a person? I was thinking about it!! I want to create WikiProject Humanism. Humanism is a much broader philosophy than atheism or agnosticism. You are one of the best editors on Wikipedia and it would be great if you help me. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 07:35, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
The first step is to figure out what the WikiProject's goals should be. What does the subject "Humanism" on Wikipedia need? You may want to start at List of basic humanism topics in surveying/exploring the subject. I find the basic topic lists to be exceptional tools for mapping subjects as I explore them. Maybe you will too. The Transhumanist    07:51, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
The goal of the project should be to improve Humanism-related articles. People still don't understand much about Humanism. We have WikiProject Atheism. Humanism is a much broader philosophy than atheism or agnosticism. I think the project will be helpful. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 08:06, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Just improve existing articles? The Transhumanist    15:54, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, now I think Wikipedia:WikiProject Humanism is unnecessary. We already have WikiProject Philosophy. I think we should focus on improving Humanism related articles. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 03:52, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Dear Masterpiece, thank you for adding your voice in the matter of the "Stefan Banach" article, which has been plagued recently by one of those misguided or unbalanced individuals who prowl the halls of Wikipedia.

How are things lately with you? What is holding up the "Richard Dawkins" FA status? Since the subject of the article has previously contributed to it, why not appeal to him to resolve any substantive questions — by email, if it's turned on? It was a fine article months ago, and should be promoted without further unnecessary delay. Nihil novi (talk) 06:25, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello Nihil novi. Thank you for your comment. I am interested in the history of mathematics. Stefan Banach was a Polish mathematician. It is a well-known fact.
I am fine. I think the article Richard Dawkins should be nominated for the FA status in June. There are still some problems. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 08:31, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WBOSITG's RfA

[edit] My RfA

Hi Masterpiece2000; I wanted to say thank you for supporting my request for adminship, which passed with 100 supports, 0 opposes and 1 neutral. I wanted to get round everybody individually, even though it's considered by some to be spam (which... I suppose it is! but anyway. :)). It means a lot to me that the community has placed its trust in my ability to use the extra buttons, and I only hope I can live up to its expectations. If you need anything, or notice something that bothers you, don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks again, PeterSymonds | talk 22:25, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Sociology in Poland

I plan to expand it to a DYKable size today. Despite all my writings about history of Poland, I am supposed to be getting a PhD in sociology so... :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 13:09, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Yep, masters in eco and soc and aiming for phd in soc. I want to write economic history of Poland one of those days, too... :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 13:21, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RFA Thanks

Thanks for your support at my recent Request for adminship. I hope you find I live up to your expectations. Best, Risker (talk) 16:12, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ditto

Masterpiece2000/Archive 4, just a note of appreciation for your recent support of my request for adminship, which ended successfully with 112 supports, 2 opposes, and 1 neutral. If there's something I've realized during my RFA process this last week, it's that adminship is primarily about trust. I will strive to honour that trust in my future interactions with the community. Many thanks! Gatoclass (talk) 06:26, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RfA thanks!

RfA: Many thanks
Many thanks for your participation in my recent request for adminship. I am impressed by the amount of thought that goes into people's contribution to the RfA process, and humbled that so many have chosen to trust me with this new responsibility. I step into this new role cautiously, but will do my very best to live up to your kind words and expectations, and to further the project of the encyclopedia. Again, thank you. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 05:51, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
