[edit] Bowling graphs

Hi Masai, I think your bowling graphs are a vital addition to bowler bios on Wikipedia! I am just silghtly concerned about the colour coding for the number of wickets. Personally, I think it is quite complicated. If you see Image:World population.PNG and Image:Cricket World Cup best results.png as some examples, you will notice the colour shade changes slightly each time. I believe that will make it easier to see in which periods did the bowler take lots of wickets. I will ask others at WT:CRIC and seek their opinion. Thanks GizzaDiscuss © 06:59, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree. I don't even quite like Gizza's two examples because they change from green to blue. It's usually much clearer to use a shade of one colour, say light blue to dark blue. Stephen Turner (Talk) 09:31, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
The World population image actually changes from white to light blue to darker blue. :) GizzaDiscuss © 10:26, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
While I like the idea of these graphs, I'm afraid I can't look at them quickly and make any sense out of them. While I 'understand' them and everything, don't get me wrong here, the colours are not conducive to spotting a good innings from a bad one. I was looking at Darren Gough and while I worked out that the tallest bar (the most runs) was for 2 wickets, I spent quite a lot of time looking for the 'best innings' of 6/42ish. I would think that, as mentioned above, graduations of a single colour might be easier to pick out. Perhaps you would create some different examples so we can compare them to others. –MDCollins (talk) 11:22, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I've decided to scrap the idea of colour coding the bar to show the number of wickets taken altogether. It was causing problems for colourblind users and the graphs were becoming very tedious for me to make. Instead, I will use a similar format to the graphs on howstat.com.au, where another bar is used to show the number of wickets taken. This will make the graphs less reliant on colour to convey information, and it also means that I can make graphs much more quickly. Masai 162 14:46, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

I just wanted to pop in and let you know that I think those graphs are really good, and I don't envy you for the work you must put into them! :) 13:48, 6 September 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by SGGH (talkcontribs)

Hi mate, any chance of me being able to help with the bowling graphs? Are you able to supply the excel file so others can help you with them? Cheers. Boothy m (talk) 22:42, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] copyrighted software

i see that you're using Microsoft's software.. but i'd suggest you try GNUPlot.. it's free and a much more powerful graphing software.. Sai2020 03:02, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

I've had a look at GNUPlot, but I'm not very good with command-line driven software, and even a specialist graphing program like GNUPlot probably wouldn't be able to provide much more help than Excel can when creating things as specialised as the bowling graphs; I only use Excel to create the bare bones of the graphs, everything else like putting separate scales on the y-axis to show both runs and wickets, and filling in the best bowling in innings/match part of the graphs, I have to do manually in Paint.Masai 162 (talk) 22:37, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok.. i expected you to respond on my talk page though..

[edit] MLB Performance Chart

I don't really know anything about modifying charts, so could you change the name of Tampa Bay from the "Devil Rays" to the "Rays", a name change that took effect this season? Jordan (talk) 23:26, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
