[edit] History

The MXT Prototipo Cero (Spanish for Prototype Zero) is actually the third commercial development by Mastretta and successor to the MXB and MXA kit-cars. Its name "MXT" comes from Mastretta and Mexico as well as a reference to its Transversal engine. The Prototipo Cero has been developed since 2004 and is impulsed by the Volkswagen Inline-4 115 hp (86 kW) that mounted its fourth generation Jetta (A4), which remains being sold along with the A5 in many countries including Mexico. Increased power allows the coupé to reach 200 km/h (124 mph). This contrasts with the top speed and performance of its predecessor the MXB which reached 127 km/h (79 mph) with the VW Boxer-4 44 hp (33 kW).

Equipment includes racing seatbelts, xenon headlights, ABS brakes, magnesium wheels, digital board instruments, Borla-made exhaust and according to its main designer and engineer, Daniel Mastretta, a maximum security level but excludes basics on many modern-day cars such as AM/FM/CD Radio or air conditioning. However, many functional parts from the board are taken from Volkswagen cars such as the wind controls and pedals from the Jetta.

Its production will begin in 2008 at Mastretta's first car factory with an annual production of 150 units. Around 70% (105 cars) will be exported to Europe and the United States, and 45 will remain for national sales with an estimated price of US$55,000.

This serial-production MXT will be powered by a 2.3 liter inline 4 with 200 hp (150 kW) allowing it to reach over 230 km/h (143 mph) on top speed.

A supercharged MXT is currently being developed by Mastretta technicians and engineerers.

  1. ^ The VAM Lerma was the first Mexican automobile, however, it used American components and partial design contrary to the MXT.
