Master of the Fleet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Royal Navy, the rank of Master of the Fleet denoted the sailing master of a fleet flagship. Examples include John Bowen (Master of the Fleet during the Glorious First of June 1794), Ian Hogg, and John H. D. Cunningham. Even when the rank of Sailing Master was renamed Navigating Officer and changed from that of a warrant officer to a commissioned officer, the title of Master of the Fleet was retained for a flagship's Navigating Officer, right up until after the Second World War.
The title has been used outside the Royal Navy, such as in Ultramarines and other science fiction, and for the captain of the Belle of Louisville.
