The Executive Masters in European and International Business Law (M.B.L.-HSG) is a postgraduate law course of study hosted by the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, one of the top European Universities for the study of European and International Business Law. The program was founded by Prof. Dr. Carl Baudenbacher, who has been President of the EFTA Court since 2004. The Executive Masters in European and International Business Law requires an undergraduate study in law or a policy-related field, and offers practicing attorneys the opportunity to learn about the legal problems that confront companies which operate, or intend to operate, in international markets. Topics include principles of European economic integration, European competition and antitrust law, the World Trade Organization, and U.S. laws related to international business transactions. In addition, there is solid coverage of the emerging topics in Corporate Governance, Finance, international Taxation and international Mergers & Acquisitions. Although the MBL program maintains a unique approach, the scope of study is similar to a legum magistra, also known as an LLM.
The primary language of the course is in German, although several modules are also taught in English. The executive model operates in several so-called blocks, offering students an opportunity to meet established European academics and practitioners in Europe while maintaining their professional obligations in the U.S. The course takes place over a period of approximately 18 months, divided into nine one-week blocks which take place with approximately two months in between. Students travel and participate in one-week blocks which take place in Europe and the U.S. with partner institutions, including: St. Gallen and Geneva, (University of St. Gallen); Austin (University of Texas) and Cambridge (Harvard); Bruges, Belgium (College d’Europe); Vaduz, Lichtenstein; and Berlin, Germany. Additional modules are planned in China and other locations.
The students must write a comprehensive Thesis or Dissertation, which many of the students publish after graduation.
