[edit] Philosophy

How professional management has propelled the Ambanis (Businessworld, November 30, 1998) and the lack of it has nearly bankrupted the Ruias of the famed ESSAR House (Economic Times, August 9, 1999) goes to show that effective management does not emerge by accident. Effective management combines many arts and artifacts and it is proactive. A good manager establishes a vision and the goals for the organization, chalks out specific patterns of decisions and actions (strategies) to achieve those goals, and then executes them. While IME recognizes that mere coursework will not normally make one an effective manager, the rigor to which the IME faculty subjects its students imparts in them the potential to be a top notch business or management analyst. Some 350 IME M.Techs. today literally stand out in the crowd. They are into every imaginable kind of enterprise and many have set up their own firms. While many are ERP/SAP/BPR consultants and software jocks, few have returned to hard core engineering as full time pursuit. But they have all taken full advantage of their B Tech. training in mechanical, civil or electrical engineering to relate well to the content of their employers' business. Many are now systems experts in India and abroad and some 35% are in manufacturing or service management.
