Every four years, Massachusetts holds state-wide elections for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the Commonwealth, and Treasurer.

In 1990, Republican William Weld was elected Governor of Massachusetts for the first time. He beat Democrat John Silber. Democratic incumbent Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Murphy lost in the primaries. Democratic incumbent Governor Michael Dukakis did not run.
