Every four years, Massachusetts holds state-wide elections for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the Commonwealth, and Treasurer.

In 1982, Michael Dukakis was elected Governor of Massachusetts for a second non-consecutive term. He beat Republican John W. Sears in the General election after defeating Incumbent Governor Edward J. King in the Democratic Party.
