Route 49 runs from Route 9 in Spencer to U.S. Route 20 in Sturbridge, going through East Brookfield and a small portion of Charlton. At six miles in length, it is principally a two lane highway with a 55 MPH speed limit.
Although the road is officially designated in Spencer and East Brookfield as Philip Quinn Memorial Highway, the entire length of the highway is commonly known as the Podunk Pike, after Podunk Road and the Podunk section of East Brookfield, which it bypasses.
[edit] September 2006 Rock Throwing Incidents
As of 2006-09-26, there have been four instances where a southbound vehicle has been struck by projectiles thrown from a northbound vehicle that has been described as a blue Camaro. Twice the projectile used was a rock; once the projectile was a bottle of suntan lotion. The projectile used in the most recent incident has yet to be recovered.
