[edit] Playing career
Raymond was one of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s top scorers, posting 27 goals and 62 points in 57 games. With the Camrose Kodiaks, he stood out from what was otherwise a highly talented team, a clutch performer, with six game winning goals.[1]
Raymond then joined the WCHA's University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in the 2005–06 season. In the 2006–2007 season with the Bulldogs, Raymond led the Bulldogs in scoring with 46 points (14 goals, 32 assists) as well as several other statistical categories. He also led in goals and assists as well. Furthermore, 28 of his 46 points came on the powerplay, again leading the WCHA in that year. His 46 overall points ranked third in the conference. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Raymond was seen as a model of consistency, which led Raymond to account for 17 percent of the Bulldogs entire offensive production. Not surprisingly, Raymond was then award the University of Minnesota Duluth's Mike Seiler Award, as the team’s Most Valuable Player, was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team of that year,[1] and was twice anointed WCHA Player of the Week.[2]
On March 16, 2007, Raymond choose to forego his final two years of college eligibility to turn pro. He then reported to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL[3] His first game with the Moose, on March 23rd 2007 against the Grand Rapids Griffins, netted him his first AHL goal and third star of the game for his performance. He then managed an assist in his second pro game.
On October 5, 2007, Raymond picked up his first NHL point in a losing effort in the season opener with San Jose Sharks with an assist off Brendan Morrison's goal.
After just 9 games in his first season, he was assigned to the Manitoba Moose before being recalled back to the Canucks in December where he scored his first NHL goal on December 12, 2007 in a 3–2 win against Jean-Sebastien Giguere of the Anaheim Ducks. Later that game, he assisted linemate Jason Jaffray's first NHL goal.
On January 5, 2008 won the Canucks fastest skater competition with a time of 14.283 seconds.[4]
[edit] Off the ice
Mason Raymond is currently engaged with the daughter of Andy Murray's cousin.[5] His father was also a hockey player and would build ice hockey ponds for Raymond to play on as a child; he names him as his idol growing up.[6]
Raymond was also mentioned in an episode of How I Met Your Mother.[7] In his spare time, he enjoys hunting.[6]
