[edit] History
[edit] Early Years
Mashpee Commons originally started out in the 1960s as any other shopping center would. There was known as the New Seabury Shopping Center. There was originally 62,000 square feet (5,800 m²) of retail floor area and a large, asphalt parking lot in front of it. Built in 1960, the tenants at the center were a food store, a home furnishing/hardware store, a bank, a restaurant and a theatre. The food store evolved into a Star Market over time until it was eventually closed around 2006 and divided up into shops. The theater lived on into today's Regal Cinemas.
[edit] Transformation
In 1986, the shopping center was bought. It was then developed over the years into Mashpee Commons. The original building took place in the Stop & Shop section of the development. Areas fronting Route 151 also were part of the original development. Over the years the old grounds for the travelling fairs were built up into shops and other places. Mashpee Commons now contains a library, a church, a Boys and Girls Club, a post office, a six-screen movie theatre, a number of restaurants, a senior center and elderly housing. In all, there is now 278,946 square feet (25,914.9 m²) of commercial tenants and 40 residential units above the retail space.[1]
[edit] Future
There are many plans in place concerning the future of the shopping center. The developers plan to add more housing and businesses as well as giving it a village style green. This is important because before there was ever a commons, there was no center of town in Mashpee. This can be traced to it being a reservation to the Wampanoag, who were very different from the white settlers.
[edit] Community Events
The owners of Mashpee Commons are really community oriented which has shown in their actions concerning the community. During verious stages of the year they host concerts, fireworks, Octoberfests, and many other things.
