A mash tun is an insulated brewing vessel with a false bottom used in brewing. It is used to steep the various grains selected for brewing grain based alcoholic beverages at the desired temperature. Grain is mixed with water and allowed to steep for a set amount of time (60 to 90 minutes). In the mash tun, hot water is added to the grains. The water then percolates into the grains, making them soft, and producing a nutrient-rich liquid called wort.
