This is the cover of a 1968 printing of the first edition of Mastering the Art of French Cooking volume 1. It was purchased in a used bookstore in Cambridge, MA and did not include a dust jacket (used editions with the original dust jacket are evidently quite rare). Surface discoloration and significant wear and tear indicate that it was likely an actively used kitchen copy.

The repeating pattern of fleur-de-lis and asterisks was used on both volumes of Mastering, shifted to blue-on-white for volume 2 in 1970 and gold-on-aqua for the paperback editions; it was reused in brown-on-green for Julia's Kitchen Wisdom in 2000.
