[edit] Anti-Americanism

Please be careful about what you do to the articles related to Anti-Americanism. It's been one of the most embarrassing articles on WP for a long time, the location of many flame and edit wars, and we just barely managed to establish some sort of cease-fire which coincides with the splitting (not for the first time, btw) of the article. A heavy-handed approach is not recommended. Rl 08:26, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I wasn't referring to the Samuel Johnson edit -- sorry, I wasn't clear there. I just meant to warn you not to make sweeping changes that might restart the old wars. As for the "idiotic" split: Even if you don't appreciate the semantic distinction, it has served us well in keeping the parties in one of WP's nastier edit wars separated. It's a very pragmatic thing, really. Fortunately, there aren't thousands of articles like that. More power to you if you can negotiate a combined article that draws less fire than the current articles (there are three of them). Rl 14:32, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

If you revert (even only parts of) an article to anything but the second-to-last version, it is essential for other editors that you indicate which version you are reverting to. I'd suggest an edit summary like "restore intro to last edit by Edward". Rl 11:12, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Aloha. In the future, it is a good idea to initiate discussion or place merge headers on the articles before initiating the merge without comments from other users. I don't think that Mars Direct should have been merged with The Case For Mars for many reasons, including the fact that Mars Direct predates the book by at least six years, if not more (see Zubrin, Baker. (1990). "Mars Direct, Humans to the Red Planet by 1999." 41st Congress of the International Astronautical Federation). I'm sorry, but I haven't had any time to discuss this issue. I maintain my original position: the book is a separate entity and goes far beyond the plan itself. as well as the papers from AIAA and IAF. This info should exist on a separate page from the book. A good example of what the Mars Direct wikipedia article should look like in its most primitive form can be found here:[1] [2]. The book expands on this topic, but does not contain it. The Mars Direct section should summarize the main article with a link at the top Main article: Mars Direct and that page should be expanded to include the AIAA and IAF papers, links to The Case for Mars as well as information from the Mars Direct [3] video. In fact, it would be reasonable to contain the book within the Mars Direct page, instead of the other way around. Do you know if there is Wiki-page that shows immediately when new articles are created and if it is open to non-Admins? It seems to me there must be or things wouldn't wind up on VfD within minutes. Yup, there are two ways, in fact. The first is to go to Special:Newpages, either through that link or by typing it out in your adress bar. I'm actually not entirely sure how one is supposed to know this — the only place I've seen the link posted is at Wikipedia:RC patrol, which isn't a page most people would go to often. The second, I expect more common way, is that many people montor the Recent changes page to keep an eye out for vandalism, and new pages show up with an N next to them. If the page has a title that catches someone's eye, or is made by an anon IP or a new user (shown by their talk-page red link), you can bet that it will have several editors check it out to see if it's ok. — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 17:38, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for info. I think this is relevant enough to have a link on the help page. I could add this reasonably but don't think I have the seniority; you might do this or at least solicit opinions. If there was a monitoring system for the Special:Newpages it would partly eliminate problems with VfD months later. I watched the page for an hour after you noted it to me and threw five articles on Speedy deletions easily. Considering the over-all volume, I can only imagine how many of the (almost now) 700 000 articles slipped thru unobserved and should have been stopped as soon as they were started. You really ought to feel free to add things to whichever help page you think the link applies to. There is sometimes some implied seniority in that, if users know you they might be more likely to trust that your actions are in good faith, but any user who reverts a good-faith addition to a help page ought certainly to take it to the talk page and discuss it if nothing else.
In answer to your monitoring system thoughts, though, I think people who watch Recent Changes already do this — indeed, as you said, many articles get VfD's within minutes of their creation. It's always difficult to know what would have gotten through had you not been watching the page: for instance, when I have the time to vandal watch, I might catch and revert twenty or so vandalisms within ten minutes. That said, they would have probably been caught even if I hadn't been watching the RC.
Anyway, if you're interested in this, I know that some users get the RC to show up constantly in their RSS feed, and I bet you could do the same thing with NewPages. You'd have to ask at one of the help desks for detais, though.

Regarding your movie, a few things exclude it.
  • It doesn't exist yet. Think, for example, if we had a page for My Grandfather's Life and the entry stated "this is a book currently being writtern which is expected to be released in 2007." I think you can understand this wouldn't be acceptable. There are pages for major releases that haven't appeared yet--i.e., the third Star Wars prequel had a page before it was released--but of course your movie is not at that level.
  • It doesn't appear to have the exposure needed to be notable. There are no hard-and-fast rules to notability (the bar seems lower for music topics versus books, for instance) but with movies I'd suggest that they should have theatrical release or at least major distribution on video. If your movie is shown at a High School Arts Fest, for instance, it simply wouldn't have the exposure needed to qualify here. Again, we can't know because the movie doesn't exist.
  • It may be vanity. You can write about yourself on Wiki but it is discouraged because its hard to objectively decide on notability when thinking about yourself and it opens the door to sales pitches and self-promotion.

I am still here.. I had been meaning to take a break from the article, after I felt I was losing my objectivity. I'm glad you stepped in or our argument, from our respective entrenched positions, would have continued. When I come back, I will try to look for links that discuss British exaggeration, though I am doubting I will find many. The same is true in the US currently (even in schools books and academe,[4]) and only in the past few years have Hindus been challenging it. The blame I think lies with Hindus that may have historically ignored, accepted the misrepresentations as well. --Pranathi 16:09, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

  • all the people listed there lived and worked in the city (min one year).
  • about the name of the page - maybe more users could give their opinion. For example Mozart loved Prague and was writing operas for it (but he was probably not citizen -allthough worked there) or Einstein began the work on the Theory of relativity there (during his teaching in Prague University).
  • Im not sure what you mean with "try to avoid notes to self/others on the main page. I put it in the discussion - it is not the main page...? (I´m new - maybe Im wrong)

Hey. I'm not a physical anthropologist, but I finished a course on it last year. The textbook (Introduction to Physical Anthropology, Jurmaine, Kilgore, Trevathan, Nelson, 2003, Wadsworth Publications) we used did not include the Pongidae in Hominidae, and the Professor followed this as well. It noted the dispute in the text, however. Yet the claim I saw in the various Wiki articles here that "a classification excluding Pongidae from Hominidae was abandoned after 1980" is wrong, and I want to make sure the divergent classifications are still noted, since they are still used. ---Decius 23:56, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

No, it is correct. It was abandoned by primatologists. It takes a while for what the scientists who are actually studying to get into the textbooks. Most textbooks are 5-10 years or more behind the times for science that doesn't affect the everyday person. Okay, since I am not keeping up with changes after 2003. I got into editing the hominid articles after a debate with a certain gentleman here: Talk:Pelasgians, who was claiming that 9 million year old Ouranopithecus fossils found in Greece support the fringe theory that the ancient Pelasgians were Hellenes. I have no especial interest in the subject however, and you may "take the reins". However, my above statement was correct in one area: it was not abandoned after 1980, but more recently (I can quote the textbook which indicates that it was not replaced as of the writing of the text). ---Decius 13:37, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

It's fair to ask you stop editting until we have a chance to discuss so that you understand why the articles are the way they are. Yes, the classification of the two orangutan species is also fairly well settled as the only extant members of the Ponginae subfamily of the Hominidae. Adding disambiguation text to Hominidae would be fairly appropriate since hominid redirects there, or changing the redirect into a disambig, as long as the disambig agrees with the existing articles. Please discuss further edits on the appropriate talk pages, or on the talk for WP:PRIM. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:50, August 24, 2005 (UTC)

Well said, sir. Yes, the chimp-human relationship certainly was one of the motivators in the recent changes. And I certainly agree that the poor use of terminology on so-called educational programs doesn't help matters. Sometimes I think I'm fighting an uphill battle to get folks to understand that what they know isn't always correct, and that just becuse you've read it in a textbook or seen it on an education program doesn't mean it's up-to-date. Yes, 5000 is ridiculously small and just a lousy benchmark anyway you look at it. Unfortunately I don't see much hope currently of fixing this. A large number of inclusionist wikipedians will vote keep for any bio if the person has appeared on television even a single time, so their votes to keep local anchors are at least consistent. Others do sometimes vote delete but consider local anchors to be notable enough for bios. I find these class based arguments to be poor, but they are very common (keep all schools, keep everyone who has appeared on television, etc.). The question I ask is, What specific accomplishments does this individual have that are encyclopedically noteworthy? Quale 09:40, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

I got an e-mail from another user and I can't for the life of me figure out where you can look at other people's preferences. (No problem on the admin vote incidentally--congrats). As far as I know, the only way that you can tell is by looking at the little "E-mail this user" link when you view a User Page (bottom left on the monobook skin). The link will let you send an email, though it won't give you the address for spam-prevention reasons. If the user doesn't have an email set, it either won't show the link or it will tell you so when you click on it (I can't remember which off-hand). Alternatively, people might show their email address on their user page (like I do), or you could always just ask them for their address in their Talk. — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 10:43, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

Are you using monobook (check Preferences -> Skins)? Check my user page (or your own, for that matter) - no link at the bottom left, under "User Contributions"? Your statement in the talk page of the article is very reasonable and I agree with your final conclusion. But this won't work without a general policy enforced by blocks and other penalties, I'm afraid (see the discussion above and the history of the article). It hasn't gone to RfC. I suggest to wait a few days, until it gets removed from Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts plus 2 days more. Your idea of poll is good, but I suggest to a) make it an official poll b) state as a rule that only non-Polish, non-German, non-Russian, non-Jewish and non-Lithuanian editors can take part in the poll. I don't see why you agree with Wagon that I have had bad behavior; if I've done something specific, please address it specifically -but broad generalizations about behavior do not persuade me.

IN ADDITION to that, now, I'm not trying to offend you (you may have not meant it), but you big-time, major-league misquoted and misrepresented me: You claimed you opposed a current version of Schiavo that I do NOT support, and I am sure you understand how anyone does not like being misquoted. At this perma-link diff is saved the current state where I quote you, and show that I had not said that at all. Please take a look at the brand new section, in which I take issue with you and Taxman having big-time misquoted me in re Schiavo. That paragraph, supported by me, Ann, and even FuelWagon, and probably Patsw and also probably by the two arbiters (who do get to vote, lol), namely Fernando and Uncle Ed --that paragraph is the first mention of Terri being put into a hospice, and you will surely get voted down. That is one of the central themes: The "woman in the hospice" --how'd she get there? Why would they put a non-terminal person in a hospice? What is a "hospice?" -what did the major players say? You mind as well take out all references to PVS (both the pro-and the con ones) -you mind as well remove all references to Michael Schiavo -after all, we wouldn't wanna bloat the already long "Terri" article with stuff about Michael, now would we? And, let's also remove any mention of her parents -you know, just to be fair."
  • Marskell, your suggestions did not fall upon deaf ears: I agree with your major premise: (quoting you from my page: "I'm also going to suggest that you and FuelWagon make a good faith promise not to edit that section (not the article itself) for a few days.") --that was not only a good suggestion, but well-intended in the right spirit --to leave the section alone for a while, --so why you think that little paragraph (a key introduction to the "hospice topic") should be deleted is beyond me. I am also fearful that I hurt Taxman's feelings -but again -I can't read minds. Outside an act of God, the article will mention Terri's placement in a hospice; Wagon and I are squabbling over one small point, which is whether to report both major objections that Terri's parents had -or just one; referring to both their concerns of both financial mismanagement and also the legality of the placement itself. Everybody's getting whipped into a frenzy over one small point of disagreement, and this is not good. YES, I think the article has material that is extra and could go, but not, for God's sake, the major points; if you don't get this point, please re-read the first paragraph, immediately above.
