[edit] OLD MESSAGES

Welcome to Wikipedia! Rest assured that just because you're young doesn't mean we won't take you seriously. Then again, just because you're young doesn't mean your work isn't going to escape criticism and editing. Seeing you're from WA, could you maybe extend the WA and Perth entries? Hope you can stick around --Robert Merkel

Yes, welcome Mark! There are a couple of other high school Wikipedians, Dreamyshade and Jzcool, both of whom are major contributors. Around here, we generally judge people by their contributions, not their ages. :) You commented elsewhere that you'd like to act as a "multimedia scout"; please do so! The fun thing about Wikipedia is that no one (except Larry Sanger) acts in an official position; we all do what is most interesting to us. --Stephen Gilbert

Regarding using IM rather than talk, there is a wikipedia IRC channel.

Hi, Mark, thanks for the kind words. -- Zoe

Well, you seem to be the most active wikipedian at the moment! You're doing great. P.S. why don't make a new redirect page at "Zoe" to go to your user page... saves typing that link every time - User:Mark Ryan
ok I just answered myself. Just type [ [ zoe ] ]
Mark, you don't have to do that. Just type three tildes (~) together and, if you're logged in, it automatically types your user page link. -- Zoe
just shows how long I've been away! Last time I was on Wikipedia, they used a completely different User Interface and software. You caouldn't do half the stuff you can now. - Mark Ryan
Right, the new stuff is pretty cool. -- Zoe
Zoe, can you look at the article Perth, Western Australia for me? I made an aerial map which I have put there, but I'm concerned it's too large and unnecessary a file (100Kb). Maybe I should reduce its size a bit? - Mark Ryan
It looks fine to me, it doesn't crowd into the margins and it isn't too long. -- Zoe

Hi Mark, I just saw your question about Fraser's appointment as PM. Yes he was appointed directly to replace Whitlam. It had nothing to do with the general election. In most parliamentary democracies, a PM is appointed by the head of state. Some require a prior nomination or subsequent confirmation. Like many, Australia's doesn't. The Governor-General, as he is constitutionally entitled to do through reserve powers, changed PMs the same day (at least I think it was the same day, but in any case, Fraser's appointment had nothing to do with the general election.

Technically the Queen has no role in the appointment, though if I remember the Commonwealth of Australia Act correctly, it might have been done in her name. In fact, even though a lot of the things the Governor-General does are done in HM's name, she has absolutely nothing to do with them, with the first information she gets being either a phonecall from Government House or reading it in the next morning's newspapers. I hope that clarifies matters STÓD/ÉÍRE 05:38 Mar 24, 2003 (UTC)

Hi. I was just browsing through your contributions (I'm very nosy), and noticed you made a comment on User talk:Tim Starling/Sodium Chloride Temp about 4 months ago. It was news to me: I didn't have it on my watchlist. Sodium chloride is in the unfortunate position (along with gallium arsenide) of being half-done and forgotten about. It's not quite as spiffy as the 20 tables I did in bulk. I should really do something about that. Anyway, thanks for the alternate m.p. and b.p. figures, I'll look into it. -- Tim Starling 13:56 Apr 25, 2003 (UTC)

Strawman alert! There is no legal right to murder. This is also not at all comparable to the issue of same-sex marriage esp since murder denies all rights to a person while same-sex marriage is about granting currently denied rights to people. --mav 05:59, 1 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I was tired, forgive me? lol - all I think I was trying to say is that surely the constitutional issue here is that only certain groups of people are afforded the right to marry? Whereas there was some sort of ambiguity with the original text of it - Mark Ryan
I should have said that I liked your edit, but just didn't like the edit summary. :) --mav

Apologies re Education in Australia. I don't know what I was thinking at the time... Dysprosia 10:21, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure what you are apologising for. Is it my comment when I edited the article? Because I wasn't blaming you; what you wrote was perfectly valid for New South Wales. I really should watch what I say in my edit summaries, because they make me sound either exciteable or cynical... Either way, see my comment at Talk:Education in Australia. - Mark Ryan 11:56, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
:) I should have known better in any case. If I was in my normal, right frame of mind, I would have known better than to be all NSW-centric... Dysprosia 12:05, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Mark - I've been watching your edits for a little while now and I like what I've seen. If I nominate you to be an admin, would you accept? --Raul654 21:14, 9 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Well, I must say, I'm certainly impressed - it's not often that someone turns down an offer like that. One thing though - When it comes time that you want to be an admin, don't request it. Allow me to nominate you. It seems to me that 3rd party nominations are looked upon a lot more favorably, and tend to go through more easily. --Raul654 03:23, 10 Jan 2004 (UTC)

No, I don't mind you having the name at all. And I figure if someone is going to have it, it might as well be you ;) --Raul654 05:55, 10 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Actually the word premiership with a small p is perfectly acceptable as a word to describe a Prime Minister's term of office. (eg "Under John Howard's premiership Australia has gone to the dogs.") Adam 03:09, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Featured Article - Butterfly

Mark - if you think a particular article should be featured, it has to go through the a special process. You have to nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. If no one objects after (at least) week, it becomes a featured article. I have moved your comment on MediaWiki:feature to the candidates page. →Raul654 17:42, Mar 17, 2004 (UTC)

Mark, I'm sorry I missed your message a couple of weeks back. I am in good form, working for an MP this year so spending a lot of time in Canberra. I hope your studies are going well. I'm off to see the Demons beat Hawthorn tomorrow. Adam 12:39, 26 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Fetus/Foetus

Thanks for your note on my talk page about Australia's use of "foetus" instead of "fetus". I'm well aware of the use of "foetus" outside of the US. However, as has been noted on the Talk:Fetus and User talk:Hephaestos, both the IUPAC and NEJM—along with the British Medical Journal [1]—have argued that "foetus" is an incorrect spelling or, in the very least, prefer the use of "fetus" over "foetus". In fact, User:MMGB raised a great point when he mentioned that fetus is derived from the Latin "fetus", and that the pseudo-Greek usage of "oe" in "foetus" is simply wrong. --Diberri | Talk

Dear Mark, I hope you enjoyed the Eagles v Demons match as much as I did, but I suppose you didn't. Nice to see more Australians here. Adam 02:52, 10 May 2004 (UTC) (see also Melbourne Football Club).

Mark, if you are implying that the Demons are an indecent and unpopular team, i shall have to slap you. (Also I am pleased to see that wing collars are making a comeback.) Cheers Adam 03:37, 11 May 2004 (UTC)

With whom is Collingwood popular? Not with anyone I know. :) Adam 03:52, 11 May 2004 (UTC)

They certainly have the largest membership and probably the largest supporter base of any of the Victorian clubs, although Essendon would be running them close. I doubt they have more supporters than the Adelaide or Perth teams, which have whole states to themselves. In any case they are certainly the most unpopular team in Victoria, since everyone who doesn't actually barrack for them hates them. This is partly traditional (when I was four my father said I could barrack for anyone I liked except Collingwood), but has been aggravated in recent years by McGuire's arrogance. [edit] Comments added by User:203.220.171.43

I do not believe that John Howard should have to say sorry. I'm not saying that what happened to the aborigines wasn't truly terrible. 'The Stolen Generation' is Australia's lowest point in history. However, should John Howard have to apologise for something that his predecessors decided upon before he was born. I don't think so. Would you blame Germany's current head of state for the horrors Hitler inflicted on the Jewish race during the Holocaust?

Go back several generations, and I am of Greek descent. Is it right to blame me for the Trojan War? For goodness sake, give our government a break!

John Howard can't be that bad- he's been voted for several times. He's doing something right. You're just biased because of the War. Want to talk about it?

[edit] Template: DYK

[edit] Image Div on Selected Anniversaries

Hi Mark, I have to apologize- it was I that placed the image on Template:July 4 selected anniversaries. However, can you explain to me why the div is necessary? When I display it with just the |right| tag in the image tag, it looks fine in my browser. I understand that there are browser differences, so I'm just trying to see what I should be checking for when I modify these images. Thanks! -- DropDeadGorgias (talk) 15:00, Jun 30, 2004 (UTC)

Whoa, thanks for the very detailed reply, complete with ridiculously helpful diagram! I'll remember to put that in from now on. Other than the colored panels on the main page, are there any other areas where I should be careful about using divs for images? I notice that a lot of other articles use divs when it seems like the mediawiki markup will do fine. - DropDeadGorgias (talk) 19:34, Jun 30, 2004 (UTC)
Yup, you've converted me... Well, I troll the selected anniversaries regularly checking for past tense and the like, so I figured I'd fix some images while I was there. - DropDeadGorgias (talk) 13:29, Jul 13, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Perth

I'd have thought that searching for Perth would mean the original Perth, and when mentioning the place where you live, would have deliberately entered Perth, Western Australia or Perth, Australia. See Wikipedia:Offline reports/This is one of the most linked to disambiguation pages; 104 pages link(ed) there. That's why I moved it. Dunc_Harris| 16:41, 3 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Images on Childlove

Mark, why are you removing the images from Childlove movement? -- Cecropia | Talk 13:49, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Yes, we do need the images and no, they are not redundant. You can't have an article that soft-peddles what people want to justify, and leave out images that illustrate what they really have in mind. -- Cecropia | Talk 14:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

What is the relevence of your point on the hopmosexuality article? We have no images on many Wikipedia articles because noone has posted any. Feel free to post a picture on the homosexuality article. If its appropriate, noone should object. -- Cecropia | Talk 14:58, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

If that's your concern, don't worry about it. The article and pictures are connected. The article needs context. As to IRC, I would be cautious about running debates on IRC, they have a life of their own which is very un-Wikipedian and (not referring to the current case) a little lynch-mobbish. -- Cecropia | Talk 15:09, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I understand, Mark. The article needs work, but it does describe something real which it is appropriate for Wikipedia to cover in all aspects. There are many challengable assumptions other than that the activities are illegal. I'm particularly bothered that there is virtually no distinction made between pre- and post-pubescent activity. If you're interested, perhaps you could look for ways to allow the advocates to describe their movement, yet achieve balance so it isn't an uncritical acceptance of their claims. -- Cecropia | Talk 15:37, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] re: Internet Explorer

I just saw a special:newpage by an anon IP entitled "removing Internet Explorer" and decided to merge it into the main IE page as it was unencyclopedic as it was. I though there would be enough people watching that page to clean it up and decide whether they wanted it or not. I thought it was marginally meritting of inclusion in the main IE article, but have no strong opinion. Dunc_Harris| 12:54, 6 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Burger King

May I ask why my statistic about Burger King was removed?

[edit] Burger King

The question is what do you use to verify material? The Burger King ranking appears on the Advertising Age magazine Top 100 list of U.S. advertisers, 6/23/2003. If this isn't enough it's also published on page 270 of the 2004 World Almanac and Book of Facts.

[edit] Sources?

Before you remove a fact you might want to use a variety of research tools and publications to verify it. You can't always judge facts by the way "the look." What methods do you follow? What tools do you use? Do you use any reference books? Are you only relying on what you find on the web?

Also, you might want to watch your use of "factoid." See the definition: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=factoid&x=0&y=0

"an invented fact believed to be true because of its appearance in print." Can a factoid be genuine? My post was not a factoid but a fact.

Aloha, Mark, verification for 69.138.229.236's Hawaii tax statistic can be found here, from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. In fairness, though, our state government handles duties normally handled by municipal governments in the U.S. [2] KeithH 06:48, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Response

You said you would replace the statistic IF i cited a source. I gave you the information you asked for and that seems not good enough. You also never answered my question as to what methodology and criteria you use to determine the legitimacy of facts and other information. Yes, I planned on placing related statistics on other pages. That plan has been canceled.

[edit] DC

I would also like to ask what was wrong with the addition I made to the District of Columbia entry? Did you determine the info was incorrect?

[edit] THanks for restoring.

Btw, I verified my England/warmest post using The 2004 World Almanac and Book of Facts a publication that's been around for around over 100 years and used as a basic reference book in most libraries and media organizations.

I'm happy to read that Wikipedia will soon be getting a board of review of experts.

"This realization forced the Wikimedia Foundation to start work on a formal editorial process for Wikipedia. Wales isn't sure how it will work yet; contributors might still be anonymous. But there will probably be an editorial board staffed with experts in various fields. They'll be identified by name with the Wikipedia, and stand behind the accuracy of its contents."

I'm also wondering about the sustanibility of the project over the long term. Several years ago we all read about how DMOZ was going to be the greatest thing ever created. It's now a joke.

[edit] Number of edits

Dear Mark, I saw a comment of yours on using the preview button to minimise edits. Are there guidelines on this? As a newbie I tend to edit an article, look at the preview and then save it. If I spot an error I have missed I then fix that. Then I might look at the article again for more things that need attention. I might spend and hour or two on an article doing 1-5 edits before moving on. This grazing and rather bovine behaviour suits me and means that I reduce the possibility of server conflicts on the article during my edits. I guess the other idea would be to post a template message asking people not to edit the article for the next hour and work on it slowly and methodically. Anyway, as stated earlier, is there a policy on this? Next question. Is there a law area where I can invite lawyers to look at articles/concepts? I have recently created a page and category Mental health law and I would appreciate lawyer input. Also the other articles referred to in that article need international attention. Where can I post such a request? I have left a message on articles needing attention but is there a specific lawyer site? --CloudSurfer 07:41, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Dear Mark, Thanks for your replies to both issues. Maybe it is time to set up an ongoing Wikiproject for lawyers. I look forward to your contributions to Mental health law and its related articles. --CloudSurfer 04:53, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] sports on the main page

Hi Doops. As far as I know, there is a convention on Wikipedia to not place local sports news on Current Events or In The News. This convention is similar to that of not placing fair use or licence-unknown images on the Main Page sections. The convention to not place sport stories on the Main Page is sometimes relaxed in situations such as the Superbowl and the Soccer World Cup, which are relevant to wide snapshots of the Wikipedia readership. During the Olympic Games, we were not allowed to put sports news on In The News. Instead, a separate Main Page section was created in order to keep the sport separate from the news. For these two reasons (sport on the main page, copyrighted logo on the main page) I removed your post. The truth with sport is that we cannot possibly cover every major sporting controversey on the Main Page. So we try to keep the items interesting and internationally important. - Mark 05:27, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Of course local sports news shouldn't go on the front page; but this story seemed more than a merely local one to me — it's featured (for example) on the online front page of the New York Times, which doesn't usually cover much local Washington news. This story has been ongoing for years and years and the fact that a resolution has finally been reached is fairly newsworthy — not on a par with Korean nukes, of course, but the same sort of "human interest" story as the space flight and the asteroid (well..."lapidary interest" I guess). As for the logo — well, that wasn't my doing! :) Anyway, go ahead and remove it if you think it's too marginal. Doops 06:10, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC) [P.S. Just to quibble because I'm obsessed with accuracy sometimes, I wouldn't say that during the Olympics we "weren't allowed to put sports news on In The News" — indeed, we were allowed to put so much on that we had to create a separate section to make room for non-sports news. But I realize that's neither here nor there.]

[edit] Casinos

Will do! FYI, Tas has 2, NT has 2, Qld has 4 and all other states/territories have 1. I think it is something to do with Wrest Point being the first one and maybe the state govt encouraging it to stimulate the economy.. (there is some info about that on the Wrest Point article) will look into it! -- Chuq 02:05, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The Wrest Point Casino is in Hobart (that would be the one you are most likely familiar with) and the Country Club Casino is in Launceston (well, about 10km out) - very different style, as the name suggests! No flashy lights, has a golf course, etc. I'll write an article about it (Wrest Point is done) and add details/links to the relevant articles -- Chuq 06:07, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Thankyou for your Welcome

Changed a page to conform to British spelling for European subjects according to Wikipedia:Tutorial_(Keep_in_mind)#U.S._English_vs._British_English. Is this wrong to do, just correcting spelling for a region such as British spelling for the European Union countries. I thought this was acceptable. (I don't mind if you move this to my talk page). -- AxSkov 07:35, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

So should I just accept the spelling and forget about it? Because if I do it again I can be blocked from editing an article again, is this right? -- AxSkov 07:51, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

When reverting a page, how do you get (Reverted edits by UserA to last version by UserB) automatically for the "Edit summary"? Is there some special combination of keys for this (eg. using four tildes (~~~~) produces a signature and time/date stamp)? -- AxSkov 15:53, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Edit war?

Excuse me? I did one rollback, then I did a revert. In the second edit summary I stated that Dan Rather is not obscure, the stated reason for why the anon claims to have removed article.

I'd advise not being so quick on claiming I was involved in an edit war. Sheesh. If he'd removed it again I would have taken it to talk and not reverted again. I think it's entirely inappropriate for you to lock that page, and in fact I'm going to unlock it. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:55, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

OK, I wasn't to know that however. I explained on the talk page already that the first rollback was because I suspected vandalism, the second was to put an appropriate edit summary. I would have taken to talk next, or left it alone. I've unprotected it as I'm clearly not engaging in an edit war. - Ta bu shi da yu 04:02, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Jimbo and JoeM

Hiya :) You may have already seen this on RC, but the person you recently left a message to (User:Jimmy Wales - here) was actually an impersonator (probably JoeM himself) and not User:Jimbo Wales. See Special:Contributions/Jimmy Wales. I had to revert the copied talk page (along with your message) back to the original redirect set by Guanaco. The sock account is now blocked, of course. Hope you're doing okay! -- Hadal 10:16, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] My Adminship

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Squash
I indeed regret that my adminship had turned out 100% supportive to a very controvesial one. That was until Reene & co. came. I have thoughts in my mind that the opposers had discussed as a whole on IRC to afffect this adminship. (Upon my entrance to the #wikipedia channel, I saw a list of names of all my supporters immediately after blinking my eyes on the screen - it was brillant and a highly coincidental chance, that). I therefore assume they were talking about adminship or mine in particular.

If people think I am immature then I agree to not come on the #wikipedia _ever_ again (exc. other wikipedia channels of other languages and other wikimedia projects and the #en.wikipedia channel where I will not act 'immature') That is contrary to belief by some people.

But as with other people there are people out there ruin the reputation of other people. It should be noted that I have worked hard for the Wikipedia, despite a whole bunch of the edits may be on some mass Wikipedia projects. But, other people have just mostly reverted vandalism or just do mass Wikipedia projects. I don't think the opposers understand me very well, indeed some of them may think I am inmature.

But to the other some (as Masterhomer) suggested I am light hearted, I want to have a good time. I had wait 6 months, 1 dream and want this adminship. Further more the high casual IRC room is a tottaly different place from the Wikipedia itself. As strange as it may seem... but on the Wikipedia, editors have to be quite serious whilst on IRC it is there for some light hearted comments (#wikipedia is for such whilst #en.wikipedia is for serious, Wikipedia related talk).

It is also should be noted that even indeed Reene did say (assumingly) I am a troll, she did in fact suggested that I was one. This is because she refuses to name any of the names of the people who think I am so and therefore it is assumed that just was making this fact. She did not alledge it, she implied - and therefore that is a very serious allegation against me. It is known that the innocent should be given the benefit of the doubt and she did not prove... that I did so (See first page of comments). It was all out of the word of mouth, it is biased as a person will listn to a person they like better. You don't listen to everything that you hear - and this is one of the cases. If a person who is light hearted does that automatically qualify them as a troll? You should know because you are a Law/Commerce student, I also know this because I learnt this and school, and next year I learn Legal studies.

Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting have had controvesy off the field, but that doesn't make them bad sportsmen. Ricky has now been promoted into one of Australia's successful test and ODI captains. There will always be a rebuttal to an argument, it can never stop. But I hope you can relate to this and give me a fair go and support me.

[edit] Leaving Wikipedia

You have been a great friend Mark. I leave Wikipedia Squash (Talk) 06:58, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

==Bert Newton== You voted for Bert Newton, this week's Australian Collaboration of the week. Please come and help it become a featured-standard article. Thanks.

[edit] Back...

Thanks for you e-mail Mark. I have considered and decided to come back to Wikipedia. But I have decided to keep a low profile that means I will cut down on the amount of edits I make (maybe), I won't go to any Wikipedia related IRC channels (probably), I won't VFD unless it is one of my 'pet articles' (probably). I will unbold my signiture so it doesn't stand out (done). At least I'm back :-\ Squash | Talk 23:41, Dec 18, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Random strange rubber message

Hi there, here's a contribution from an old Polymer Technologist.

I've not worked out how to do this any otherway. But this Wiki idea looks very interesting.

All the best

Simon

Hi there,

I'm a Polymer Technologist, by trainging, but that was a long time ago. I suggest that if you are interested in more of the technical side of rubber, and there's lots to go at you try to get hold of a copy of Rubber Technology by Blow. The UK Insitute of Materials has a group of people who are interested in Rubber too. There is also the Malaysian Rubber Producer's Association, based in Bricondenbury, Hertfordshire, UK and the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers, Houston, Texas. Crain Communications publishes a number of trade magazines whihc feature the latet developments in rubber technology and the companies that process the many different rubber materials.

We were taught that rubber seeds were smugged out of Brazil, propogated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, England and then shipped to Malaysia which was under UK control. I've got a feeling this was about 1820.

Simon Robinson simon.robinson@rbi.co.uk

Yeah, I guess...thanks for the concern. I'm just having a bit of a rough time of it at the moment, and IRC was depressing me a bit, so I thought I'd go off and do something else. Ambi 12:04, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Skirts and Dresses

While I have no objection to text that seems "weird" appearing in Wikipaedia, I think you may have not properly understood my actions. I believe that the following sentence is simply inaccurate, but whether it is or not, I believe that its author is simply taking an oppertunity to rant, to use wikipaedia as a soapbox, if you will:

"In many cultures there is a significant social prejudice against those who choose to adhere to traditional female gender roles (sometimes termed being a "girly girl") by wearing dresses and skirts."

Is there really "significant social prejudice" against young women who wear dresses and skirts? There certainly isn't in the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Spain, or Japan, for instance, all countries where sales of skirts and dresses to young women are brisk, countries where one can see many young women wearing skirts or dresses in both professional and casual settings. Wikipaedia should not have inaccurate information, whether one agrees with me or not that these inaccuracies take the form of an eccentric rant.Zantastik 20:57, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your image

I've marked your personal image, Image:Mark.jpg, as unverified. You should replace it with a more friendly image copyright tag ^_^. Thanks, ugen64 22:33, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Belated wishes

A belated happy birthday, Mark! I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I hope it was a memorable one. Seems you'll have to update your user page, eh? ;) -- Hadal 10:51, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Oopsie; I didn't mean to make waves over it. ;) You're eminently welcome, of course; I'd hate to see such a comely user page marred by a glaring factual error! (Welcome to the twentysomething club, by the way.. feel any different? Didn't think so.) Cheers and such, -- Hadal 11:34, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for letting me know about the SQL queries question. I took the opportunity to answer a few others as well. FYI, the text on your user page which you probably want on top of the image is actually floating most of the way to the left and overlaping the menu choices when viewed with the Cologne Blue skin. [edit] Central Park

Judging the height of a skyscraper is a tricky business. It's even worse when the building has a spire or antenna on its roof. Depending on what system you use, the 'heights' of buildings can be very difficult to pin down. Central Park is 249m to the top of its pinnacle, and 226m to its roof. If we ignore spire heights (which I like to), and count only to the roof, Central Park would be the 5th tallest building in Australia, (after Rialto Towers, World Tower, MLC Centre, and Governor Phillip Tower) and the tallest in Perth. (My source: SkyscraperPage diagram). If we count the pinnacle height, Central Park actually comes in at 6th place (after 120 Collins Street, 101 Collins Street, Bourke Place, Rialto Towers, and Governor Phillip Tower). (SkyscraperPage diagram - I ignored the order of the buildings and counted only the listed pinnacle heights). The problem with pinnacle heights is that some are 'official' and some are not. Generally, a spire that is an integral architectural component of the building, or serves no purpose other than aesthetic, is counted in the building's height, while an antenna that serves purely or primarily a communicative function, will not be. If an antenna is still considered an architectural feature, it may still be counted. But it might just as well not be counted. It all depends on who you ask. There is no way though that I can see Central Park being listed higher than the 5th place no matter what is and what isn't counted. As you can see in the second diagram, some building's antennas aren't counted, while some building's spires or antenna-spires are counted. In fact, BankWest Tower might well be Perth's tallest (and Australia's 5th tallest) according to one system of 'official' heights.

Sorry if this simply confused you, I sure as hell know I'm confused! If you could point me to the information you used, (the Emporis site doesn't have a country-wide list that I can find), that'd be great. T.PK 10:48, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] common law v code and provocation

the difference in australian jurisdictions is extremely annoying. personaly, i preffer a code based approach. however one advantage to being in one of the common law states is that the high court sets uniform common law across australia. thus, no need to sift through annoying statutes when going from state to state. [edit] archiving on liberal talk

sorry. i was unaware of the rules about archiving. i thought that seeing as the argument was getting nowhere and it was descending into personal attacks, it was no longer of any use to have the discussion on that topic to continue. as for me removing things i find offensive about me. i am not of the practice of altering other's comments. if he wants to make a fool of himself by posting nonsense that is his problem. i will not get into an edit war over such petty nonsense. Xtra 12:59, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It was just a passing comment; I don't particularly care what you do with it. You can paste it if you want, but since I doubt our anonymous friend will read it, I don't think it matters too much. Thanks for asking, though! Lacrimosus 19:31, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

thanx for the info. my programing skills etc. are substandard and i did not know this. i apologise for the inconvenience i have cause you. Xtra 01:30, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

are you an admin? if so, can you block the anon and the server block that he jumps around? he doesnt understand that he is working against consensus and he refuses to listen to others. Xtra 04:05, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

please see the anon's talk page User talk:210.50.249.123. Xtra 04:46, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

if people like this can be allowed to run rampant, i see no point in continuing to participate in this project. Xtra 04:50, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

that's nice. he has started a request for arbitration against me. Xtra 04:56, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

the same anon, this time as 210.50.40.50 added talk to a subpage for my page which i moved to his talk page. is that the right way to remove rubbish posts? he is getting more and more inflamatory and doesnt seem to read what is written. Xtra 03:42, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi. Just a note for when you get back. I have started an arbitration against the above user. see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/PSYCH. thanx. Xtra 02:50, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image needing a tag

Hello. I was image tagging, when I came across Image:Bushland.jpg. It's tagged "unverified" at the moment. Could you add a proper image copyright tag to it? Pictures without tags will eventually be deleted. Thanks, – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 23:46, Mar 3, 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I've listed it on Wikipedia:Image sleuthing. If we can find the source, we'll know better what to do with it. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 07:08, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Hi Mark, thanks for the early welcome to the cabal, and also for the confidence you showed in me by voting on my adminship nomination. I'll certainly drop by when I need your help or judgement in exercising my new powers (currently I'm carefully exploring them).

PS We never encountered each other in the course of normal editing, I think — but I remember taking a look at your user page when I customized my sig (i.e. made it into just 'mark'). I was wondering if you would mind — it's your username after all... Best regards, mark 22:23, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stub image

I noticed that you removed the stub image last week with the message "temporarily removing image to reduce stress on image server". I was just wondering, doesn't the image server cache images? – ClockworkSoul 14:46, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

 • That's very odd. Perhaps things are so bad that even the cache is getting beaten down, though I can't see how. Thanks for the reply! – ClockworkSoul 15:06, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Revert War on England

Hi Rex. I have protected England from editing due to persistent reversion going on there. I encourage you to discuss the topic on Talk:England. - Mark 15:15, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Mark! Thank you for intervening. Tell me, how did you know that persistent reversion was going on there? REX 20:18, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sparky

Hey, I usually move pages when it seems appropriate to do so; however, there was history for sparky also *not* related to the sparky comic book stuff. So if I moved it to sparky (comic), then the history for any other material would be int he wrong place; if I left it where it was, the history for the comic part would be in the wrong place. I went with the side of leaving the history with the original article space. Elf | Talk 20:28, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User:Fadix

This user is refising to follow NPOV artcle and is atempting to dictate Armenian Genocide article on his own, declared he will revert any of my edits. What bothers me is being acused of a hidden agenda bias and other stuff he came up with. He should start following good Wikiquette --Cool Cat My Talk 08:49, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

 • Ill try harder to reason with the person. However can you suggest him the importance of Wikiquette for me?

I can live with insults, fadix is not as annoying as Stereotek. --Cool Cat My Talk 09:06, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I do not know what you know regarding Armenian Genocide, but I do know it is a disputed historical event regarding all clasifications also is a diplomatic dispute. I can give you spesific examples of the users fine work of declaring my edits throughout wikipedia, But before that I will take a sleap break. I can tollerate Fadix, he is a newbie after all. --Cool Cat My Talk 09:47, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Kurdistan Workers Party and, Abdullah Ocalan are constantly being vandalised bu User:Stereotek, his dealings with me started after my neutrality request for the Armenian Genocide article and is ona conquest to find any of my work and revert it. The user is "hunting" me down and you must stop that. I do not care about mediation when a user starts hunting me down. I am getting serriously annoyed with this person. This is an open personal attack. Check history of those articles. --Cool Cat My Talk 20:08, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
