[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Satow zoo2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Satow zoo2.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}. If you have not already done so, please also include the source of the image. In many cases this will be the website where you found it.

Please specify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

In this case, although a free license was specified, this contradicts the copyright information from the source page. --Ginkgo100 talk 21:36, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi Ginkgo100, help requested with copyrighted image you removed

Not sure how to post a message... hope this works.

It seems you have a question about the copyright ownership of the image I posted for the Denver Zoo page. I took the photo and own the copyright to it. Again, not sure how messaging works here, but if you could contact me directly through the website I specified as the origination of the image (my website), I'd be happy to respond via email to prove that the image (and the work itself) is in fact mine.

Thanks,

Hello,
I take it from your note that you are Heath Satow, the sculptor of the works. (In which case I say, good job! They're beautiful.) I deleted the image because Wikipedia is extremely careful about copyrights, and we tend to err on the side of caution.
If you really want to upload the image and release it under a free license (such as the GFDL or Creative Commons]], then by all means do so. It would be a good idea to make a note of that on your portfolio page, too. Right now it says the photos are copyrighted. You'll have to release at least the one you're uploading.
By the way, you tagged it correctly when you uploaded it; I deleted anyway because there was a discrepancy with the copyright notice on the portfolio page. Keep in mind the GFDL allows your work to be used for any purpose, including commercial purposes without compensation; it also, however, requires you to be acknowledged as the photographer (though not, curiously, as the sculptor).
Also, a quick note on Wikipedia communication: The best way to contact someone is usually at their talk page, just as you did at my talk page. Welcome to our project, and sorry your first experience was so negative. It only gets better from here! --Ginkgo100 talk 22:06, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reply to Ginkgo100, RE: copyrighted image removed

Thanks for the response... am I right in responding here? I read as much as i could of the FAQs, but it's all a bit overwhelming. Thanks for the comment about my work. :)

As for copyright, is there anyway (as the owner of the photograph and creator of the work) to release the rights to be used for wikipedia, without releasing the full rights of the image to be used in any way by anyone? Thanks for being patient with me and my confusion. :) MarkToyo 07:27, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

PS: I intended the copyright notices on my website to be for the sculpture designs themselves, thus the indication that "All work designed and fabricated by Heath Satow" before the copyright notice.

Thanks...

You uploaded and tagged the image perfectly. I was so impressed I took the liberty of placing it at the top of the Denver Zoo article. May I ask if you are a local? If so, you might be interested in Project Colorado, a collaborative effort to improve articles related to the state. Cheers! --Ginkgo100 talk 21:52, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you so much! Slowly figuring this wiki stuff out -- interesting but dense with intricacies. I'm actually in the Los Angeles area (Pasadena to be exact). Thanks again for your help. MarkToyo 03:46, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
