==About disambiguation pages==

The point of a disambiguation page is not to list every possible definition or use of a particular word in the English language; disambiguation pages are meant to assist a Wikipedia user in finding an existing page whose topic is (or could also be) the actual word used in their search query.

Before adding a topic to this page, ask yourself:

  • If you were looking for this topic on Wikipedia, would you simply and only type "shadow" as your search word?
  • Are there people who might refer to your topic by only using the word "shadow"?

Please see Wikipedia:Disambiguation and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages) for more info.

===Edits to page on XXX XX, 2008===

Having said that, these are the edits I made to this page:

  • Removed any red-links or references to topics which do not have articles of their own and lack coverage elsewhere in Wikipedia; left a couple which could perhaps be expanded at a future date.
  • Removed link to Anino, which was added due to the fact that it is also the tagalog word for "shadow". See: Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#Foreign languages.
  • Removed MANY entries due to the fact that they are topics which simply include the word "shadow", for example: Shadow government, Shadow Hand etc... It is doubtful that a person would simply type "shadow" in an attempt to find a page on one of these specific topics
  • Removed link to Cotton Mather since I doubt anyone searching for this individual would simply use the word "cotton" as their search word. Nowhere is it indicated that this individual was known simply by his first name, like Madonna or Elvis...
  • I did however leave the link to Cotton Hill since this character is often referred to simply as "Cotton" by the other characters on the series (admittedly, I watch the show...)

Certainly if anyone disagrees with anything I've removed they can feel free to place them back on this page.

[edit] Letter and ancronym dabs

There are many words and acronyms in the English language that are used to describe more than one thing; for example "Go" could refer to the actual verb, the Chinese board game, the unrelated family board game, the 2001 Japanese film, the American gameshow, the 1970s supergroup, the song by Moby, etc… So if someone were to type "go" as their search word in Wikipedia, there needs to be a way to direct them to the article on the particular "go" they are looking for.

Therefore, the point of a disambiguation page such as AP is not to list every person, place or thing with the initials "AP"; this disambiguation is meant to assist a Wikipedia user in finding an existing article whose topic is (or could be) just the word "ap" or the letters "AP".

Before adding a topic to this page, ask yourself:

  • If you were looking for this topic on Wikipedia, would you simply and only type "ap" or "AP" as your search word?
  • Is the topic of the article commonly referred to by the average person as simply "CRS"?
  • Is there a significant number of people who refer to the topic of the article by only using the word/letters "ap" or "AP"?

Please see Wikipedia:Disambiguation and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages) for more info.

Some might question why Associated Press deserves a spot on a dab page any more than say, Allied Press or Area postrema; I would point out a couple of things:

  • Many of the article links that I removed from this page did not even mention a reference to "AP" in the body of their respective articles; this adds further credence to the fact that the topic is not commonly referred to as "ap" or "AP"
  • At the time of my edits there were 52 wiki pages linked to AP (not including redirects or Wikipedia project pages.) Of those 52 pages, 14 of them meant to link to the actual dab page, and 31 were actually references to the Associated Press. The remaining 7 pages referred to topics which did not even have a link on the AP dab page.
  • I also moved some of the other links to List of acronyms and initialisms since they are better suited there

[edit] Misc

  • Disambiguation pages are non-article pages that contain no content and only refer users to other Wikipedia pages
  • Added {{lookfrom}} to “See Also” section
  • A disambiguation page has links to a heterogeneous set of concepts. It is purely for navigation, not information
  • Please do not add links that merely contain part of the page title (where there is no significant risk of confusion). Please only add links to articles that could use essentially the same title as the disambiguated term.
  • Disambiguation pages are not search indices.
  • Never include external links, either as entries or in descriptions. Disambiguation pages disambiguate Wikipedia articles, not the World-Wide Web. To note URLs that might be helpful in the future, include them as comments or on a talk page.
