Talk:Mark Romanek

[edit] birthdate
I checked on IL birthdatabase for records, and there was a one Mark Romanek born in IL on Oct 3, 1955, and not another one in the entire country. As for all of the sources that say he was 42 in 2001 in so on, that is because they probably got their information from imdb which approximated his age as being born in 1959, as he graduated from college in 1981. As for his official site making a mention of his age, I wouldn't accept that as a definitive source, as the person who wrote that article probably got their info from imdb as well, and if they even got it from Romanek himself this wouldn't be the first time a director fibs about his age.--68.126.145.15 07:00, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- That's fine, it sounds like you're justified in pushing for that change...but please replace the "discrepancy" tag and modify the note that you had deleted at the bottom of the article to reflect your findings; there's obviously still a discrepancy among available sources. - Mark Romanek has previously stated in interviews years ago that he felt a little pressured to write and direct a feature film before he turned 25, with regards to the film Static. Also, the official New Trier High School Alumni Directory (which combines New Trier East and West high schools) shows that Romanek graduated from high school in 1977. This provides further credence to the purported birth year of 1959. --Slo-mo 05:57, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'd suggest submitting an imdb update.--Fallout boy 07:37, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
- I did that over a month ago, just before I posted the correct birth year on this article (with a discrepancy notice), after Fallout boy changed it to 1955. I don't blame him/her. But take a look at Jennie Lewis at IMDB. Her DOB is listed as 1976, yet her mini biography underneath it says 1977. I believe the latter is correct, as Moviefone from AOL (and several other reputable sites) lists that date also. Evaluate your sources...as for the "IL birthdatabase" mentioned above, that database is obviously not official; anybody can make a website and say anything (I'll make an effort to believe that the anonymous poster above is not making up his/her argument)... This is what we all should have learned: 1- IMDB is not always correct (i.e. Romanek and Lewis) and 2- It's relatively safe to trust the LA Times, NY Times, etc., but not some jo-schmo website even if it says "IL birthdatabase" or whatever. Here's how to tell if the database is reliable - 1- only a database from the government is reliable and 2- if there was an official Illinois database of birthdates, would a user be able to check the name for "the entire country"? No. My intuition tells me that the U.S. government (and/or its political divisions) would not make such databases available as they can be seen as an invasion of privacy. It is best to cite your sources so that other editors can check the info. -- Slo-mo 08:13, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
