[edit] Listing for 'speedy deletion'

I am sorry that some may feel this group is unimportant; maybe I could throw some light on why I have chosen to add them, as I have added a number of American artists and groups of Mexican heritage. I should point out that I am not American or Mexican myself, that I have no commercial interest in promoting or advertising such groups or artists, but that the artists I am creating articles for do all have a certain significance in their genre. In the case of this group, they are a rarity among mariachi groups in that they are an all-female group (I myself am male, by the way, lest it be thought that I am somehow promoting feminist causes here) in a genre almost exclusively dominated by men. The only other significant all-female mariachi, about which I also plan to create an article shortly, is the Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles.

The notice proposing speedy deletion refers to the Wikipedia:Deletion of vanity articles. My reading of the first and third dot-points (in the first group of dot-points of this article) indicates that the main object is to prevent people promoting themselves or their products. Since I have no personal connection with or material interest in this group, I fail to see that this applies. I live in Australia, they live in Texas - I happen to appreciate their music and the promise their very existence holds for change in the world of mariachi. This is a genuine article on a genuine subject which will be of interest to others.

I am a serious and established Wikipedian of some months' standing, albeit with niche interests, which I believe is one of the beauties of Wikipedia - there is room for a great diversity of niche interests! I hope you will be able to see your way clear to please remove the listing of this article for speedy deletion, once admins have assessed this perspective. Many thanks! -- Ishel99 00:42, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

The user who listed this article for speedy deletion asserted in my talk page that being female was not sufficient criteria for uniqueness. This was my reply on his/her talk page: I agree that being female per se is not a criteria for inclusion, but being female in a field where that is a rarity seems to me to be notable in itself. For example, female astronauts have been considered noteworthy at a time when there were few. In Hispanic culture there are still many with very traditional attitudes towards the place of women, and the same reasoning informed my creation of an article on Yolanda Perez, a female rarity in the male-dominated world of banda. -- Ishel99 01:05, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
When I look at the other articles listed at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion I am slightly amazed that my carefully-crafted and substantial, albeit stub-quality, article could be considered in the same light. I am sorry but my short study of what else is there further reinforces my view that this listing is in error. -- Ishel99 05:31, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I vote against speedy deletion. The article does not meet the criteria. The first two sentences explain why the group is noteworthy. Thank you.--Rockero420 16:08, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
