Talk:Marcin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Is this just an article about the name Marcin, or about a specific person named Marcin? Either way, what is the importance to be included in Wikipedia? KarenAnn 15:07, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

It is an article about the name Marcin, how it relates to other names, and some other factoids.

It also includes a partial listing of notable uses of that name to identify persons or places.

Is that notable enough... well, taking Martin (name), Robert (name), and Anna (name) as examples, it seems pretty well established that pretty much every name encountered merits what is essentially a combo etymology/disambiguation page.

Just in Robert (name)#Variations alone I count 20 versions of the name Robert which have their own page.

And frankly, the basis for deletion Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Marcin was a bit strange... someone first edited away most of the article, and then ("Delete Odd article") without any discussion as to whether there might be a good reason to differentiate Marcin from Martin.

Since the editor who did the redirect indicates reduced involvement, and regardless at the time of deletion the article had already been gutted, I am recreating the article directly in accordance with Wikipedia:Undeletion_policy#Deletion_review

I mostly restored the previous full content, but I also added and made improvements toward the style of the other name pages. To also address any lingering concern about a page listing people named Marcin, I found Marcin of Urzędów, which legitimately needs a link for people looking for that particular historical figure. I am not going to be so bold as to trim down the list of "famous" Marcin's except to remove Marcin Lutor who clearly did not belong there as this is the English Wikipedia and here he is Martin Luthor. Of course, I used him in the example anyway.

Of the rest, at least some are likely notable given they have existing Wikipedia pages... the rest seem to be at least Polish, which means it is appropriate for the Marcin form of the name to be used... but I guess some research would be needed to see if they are notable enough.
