Maryland Route 43, known locally as White Marsh Boulevard, is a major road in Baltimore County . It passes through the census-designated place of White Marsh, Maryland, connecting the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), Interstate 95, and US 40. Much of its traffic comes from visitors to White Marsh Mall.

[edit] Route description

The route diverges from the Baltimore Beltway at a wye interchange (Exit 31C). The route is a suburban, four-lane divided expressway with a mixture of intersections and interchanges. After intersecting Walther Avenue and interchanging with U.S. 1, the route passes through Fullerton, running to the north of White Marsh Mall. After intersecting Perry Hall and Honeygo Boulevards the route interchanges with Interstate 95, Maryland Route 7 and U.S. 40, where it originally terminated at a trumpet interchange near the town of White Marsh.

[edit] Recent extensions

In 2006, MD 43 was extended past US 40 to connect with Eastern Avenue (MD 150). The extension passes through an undeveloped portion of Baltimore County that is zoned for business use. The county government hopes that up to $460 million in investment and up to 10,000 new jobs will be created as a result of extending the road.

The extension is also a four-lane divided expressway with several intersections, although some intersections are not yet in use and others lead only to construction sites. The route crosses one of Amtrak's main lines near Martin State Airport before terminating at MD 150 at an at-grade intersection.

[edit] History

When the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway was first constructed in 1963, a piece of MD 43 between it and US 40 was also constructed. This piece was first extended westward to the Beltway (completed 1994), and then extended eastward.

[edit] Notes

The route was only signed as MD 43 on guide signage from the routes it intersected; trailblazers on MD 43 itself were not provided until the entire route was completed.
