[edit] Route description

MD 222 starts in the south as Aiken Avenue in Perryville at an intersection with Maryland Route 7 (Broad Street). North of Pulaski Highway (U.S. Route 40), the highway is called Perryville Road.

Just south of I-95, MD 222 intersects the southern terminus of MD 824 (Blythedale Rd.), a short loop that crosses I-95 to the north of MD 222's interchange with the Interstate. MD 824 is the former alignment of US 222 before the construction of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, today part of I-95.

Just beyond MD 222's interchange with I-95, MD 222 encounters a four-way intersection with the northern terminus of MD 824 and the southern terminus of MD 276, which continues north along Perryville Rd. while MD 222 turns west along Blythedale Rd. and becomes known as Bainbridge Rd.

[edit] The route through Port Deposit

Near Port Deposit, the route makes a sharp 90-degree turn onto Main St., parallel with the Susquehanna River and one of Conrail's railroad lines, and runs north. The route intersects the southern terminus of MD 276 in downtown Port Deposit, then continues along the edge of the Susquehanna River to intersect the former southern terminus of MD 269. Just north of this intersection, MD 222 passes underneath a very low railroad bridge.

North of town, the highway is called Susquehanna River Road, running between the river and the tracks. It passes to the west of Susquehanna State Park and continues along the shoreline before reaching US 1. MD 222 then turns north and joins the U.S. highway for a mile before coming to an end at the southern terminus of US 1 and US 222. Within this intersection, Truck MD 222 begins.

[edit] History

The entire length of Maryland 222 was once part of U.S. Route 222. US 222 was originally extended south from US 1 to US 40 in Perryville in 1940. It is unclear if US 222 ever extended south of the modern Pulaski Highway to reach US 40's original route through Perryville, now part of MD 7. In 1995, the U.S. highway designation was removed south of US 1. Reasons for doing so include steep grades and insufficient clearances under a rail bridge in Port Deposit. When that designation was taken from the road, it was numbered as Maryland Route 222 (outside Cecil County's designated number range).

It is one of only two duplications in numbering between the Maryland state highway system and the U.S. highway system; the other duplication is Maryland Route 219, an unsigned spur from US 219 in Oakland.

MD 222 between Port Deposit and US 1 was ground down to concrete and repaved during the summer of 2006.

[edit] Truck MD 222

MD Route 222 Truck
Location Perryville-Conowingo

Maryland Route 222 Truck exists to provide a route for trucks unable to pass the low railroad bridge on MD 222. The route starts out at an intersection with MD 222 and MD 824 and heads north along with MD 275 from that route's southern terminus. It follows MD 275 to its northern terminus at Woodlawn, where it turns north onto MD 276. It crosses the former MD 269 near West Nottingham and MD 273 near Harrisville. The intersection between MD 273 and MD 276/Truck MD 222 is a roundabout with an inner shoulder paved with paving stones; signage at the roundabout provides instructions for heavy trucks following the truck route.

It then turns south onto US 1 at the northern terminus of MD 276 northwest of Rising Sun and follows that route southwest to Conowingo, where it ends at an intersection that also serves as the northern terminus of MD 222 and the southern terminus of US 222.

This route does not exist as a Maryland state route; the mileposts of the routes it follows are used instead.
