Maryam Mirzakhani (Persian: مریم میرزاخانی) (Born May[3] 1977 Tehran) is an Iranian mathematician. Her research interests include Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, and symplectic geometry.[3]
Recognized locally as a brilliant teenager[citation needed], she found international recognition after receiving gold medals both in International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong 1994) and International Mathematical Olympiad (Canada 1995) with a perfect score. She is the most successful Iranian participant in the competition[4].
Mirzakhani obtained her BSc in Mathematics (1999) from the Sharif University of Technology. She holds a PhD from Harvard University (2004), where she worked under the supervision of the Fields Medallist Curtis McMullen. She is a Clay Mathematics Institute Research Fellow and an assistant professor at Princeton University.
