[edit] Early life

She moved while still a baby to Dallas, Texas from Shreveport, Louisiana , where she attended Hyer Elementary School, Arch H. McCulloch Middle School, and Highland Park High School, graduating in 1982. In high school, she played the violin in the orchestra, sang in the Lads and Lassies Choir, and as a senior was the female lead in the musical The Boyfriend. She also sang in youth choirs at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, whose Crusader Choir, with her as a soloist, made an album to raise money and toured Asia and Europe.[citation needed]

In The Dallas Morning_News when she came back to perform, she claimed she didn't know that she had any real singing talent until late in her high school years. She went to the University of Cincinnati for a bachelor's in music, graduating 1986, and to Yale University for a master's in music, attained in 1988.

[edit] Career

After graduating from Yale, Mary joined the Houston Grand Opera Studio, and during the same year was a National Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Natonal Council auditions which led to many future engagements at the Met. In 1989 she went on to the San Francisco Opera, where she was in the Merola Opera program, toured with Western Opera Theater, and went on to be an Adler Fellow for two years. Afterwards she started her freelance opera career.
