Lanier was born Mary Bernadette Anderson in Mobile, Alabama[2]; she had one brother named Rupert J. Anderson who had died in 1990 at the age of 80. She had only appeared in two films including Ladies on Sweet Street in 1991 and Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me in 1993. Lanier was married 2 times; her first husband was Preston Paul Lanier, together they had one child Rose Diane Lanier (a.k.a. Diane Ladd), a successful actress; and then in 1981 she married her second husband Daniel Garey, they had no children; they were married until Mary's death. She is also the cousin by marriage of playwright Tennessee Williams; and grandmother of actress Laura Dern, and ex-mother-in-law of Bruce Dern. She was also known as Bernadette Anderson.
Lanier died on May 23, 2002, in Ojai, California, her cause of death is unknown, but some sources say natural causes. She was 89 years old at the time of her death in Ojai, Ca., she was buried in a cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
