Mary Anselmo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary Anselmo is the billionaire philanthropist widow of Reynold "Rene" Anselmo, the founder of PanAmSat, the first privately held satellite communications company in the United States. A resident of Greenwich, Connecticut, she was 79 years old as of March 2008. She regularly appears on the Forbes magazine list of wealthiest people in the world. According to the magazine's 2008 rankings, her net worth was estimated at $1.1 billion, and her rank was 1,014.[1]

She has three children:[1] Reverge C., Pier, and Rayce Anselmo.[2]

Rene Anselmo died in 1995, two days before the public offering of his company.[1] For a time, Mary was principal owner of the company, although she had rarely been involved in her husband's business and said in 1996 that she knew precious little about satellites.[2] When PanAmSat was bought by KKR and other private equity firms in 2004, she received a net $250 million.[1]

Anselmo was described as "soft-spoken and gracious", living in an "elegant chateau modeled on the Petit Trianon at Versailles" in a 1996 article in The New York Times.[2]
