Maruthamunai

Maruthamunai is a village in the Ampara district of the south-eastern region of Sri lanka. It is bounded on the north by the village of Periyaneelavanai, on the west by paddy fields together with the river bed of the Batticaloa lagoon, on the south by another village - Pandiruppu, and on the east by the Bay of Bengal of the Indian Ocean.

Maruthamunai was one of the villages most severely affected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami on December 26, 2004.[1]. The disaster killed 922 residents of the village and displaced 11086. Previous to the disaster the population of the village was officially 17393. In addition to over 1300 homes, many public buildings were destroyed by the tsunami.
