Martinsburg was hit with a tornado in the summer of 1971 it nearly leveled the town. There were several older building including the fire house which had been made from what was the 3 room school house until 1964 when Eastern High School was opened. Grades 1-6 went there. The local community seen to it that this as with lot of little schools had a band, music, and sports. There was no gym for this or many schools in those days. every school in the district shared the old Pekin School. Martinsburg was blessed the last 3 years with a basketball coach named Don Hazilip who was also the bus driver and he seen to it along with others that the kids got to play all over the county and surrounding counties. Schools are no longer willing or able to do the things that were done for students in those days. To bad for our children.
