[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

Storey played his club hurling with the famous Oulart-the Ballagh club in Wexford. The club had never won a senior county championship title in its history when Storey began his club hurling career. All this changed in 1994 when Oulart-the Ballagh and Storey captured the county title. He added a second county championship to his collection in 1995. A third county medal followed for Storey in 1997. The new century brought further success for the famous side as Storey added two further back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. His side were beaten in their quest for a third consecutive county championship in 2006.[2]

[edit] Inter-county

Storey first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the early 1980s as a member of the Wexford minor and under-21 hurling teams. He had little success in either grade before making his senior debut against Kilkenny in 1986. The early years saw Wexford continue in the doldrums as Kilkenny and Offaly dominated the Leinster Championship. The early 1990s saw the county reach three successive provincial finals, however, Storey's side were defeated on all three occasions. Similarly, the National Hurling League final of 1993 saw Wexford battle it out with Cork in a three-game saga that eventually resulted in defeat for the Wexford men. That same year, however, Storey collected his very first All-Star award.

Three years later in 1996 Storey was the Wexford captain as new manager Liam Griffin changed the mindset of Wexford hurling. That year Storey collected his first Leinster title. It was Wexford's first provincial title since 1977. The subsequent All-Ireland final saw Storey's side take on Limerick, the defeated finalists of 1994. The game itself was far from a classic as as fourteen-man Wexford defeated the Munstermen giving Storey a coveted All-Ireland medal. He was subsequently presented with a second All-Star award.

Storey captured a second Leinster title in 1997, however, the introduction of the so-called 'back-door' system resulted in the defeated Munster and Leinster finalists receiving a second chance to win the All-Ireland title. In the All-Ireland semi-final Wexford were defeated by Tipperary, the Munster runners-up. The following few years proved difficult as Wexford and Storey faced a resurgent Kilkenny that would win the next six Leinster titles. In spite of a lack of success on the field of play he won a third All-Star award in 1998. Storey retired from inter-county hurling in 2000 following two years of heavy defeats for Wexford in the provincial championship]].[3]

[edit] Province

Storey also line dout with Leinster in the inter-provincial hurling championship. He collected two Railway Cup medals as Leinster defeated Ulster in 1993 and Connacht in 1998.

[edit] Post-playing career

In retirement from playing Storey has maintained a keen interest in the game. In 2002 he took over as trainer of the Wexford senior camogie team.[4] He has also been involved with the successful Colaiste Bríde teams in Enniscorthy, who have had so much success in All-Ireland schools competitions. While still a senior player Storey had a major influence as part of the management team of the club’s under-21 team. During his tenure as a selector the team regained the county premier championship title. His name has also been mentioned as a possible future manager of the Wexford senior hurling team.

On January 17, 2008 Storey was profiled on the TG4 television programme Laochra Gael.
