Archbishop Martin John Spalding (May 23, 1810 - February 7, 1872) was the seventh Roman Catholic archbishop of Baltimore, Maryland from 1864 to 1872.

Martin John Spalding was born in Rolling Fork, Kentucky and was ordained a priest in Bardstown, Kentucky on August 14, 1834. He entered St. Mary's College, Lebanon, Kentucky in 1821, taught mathematics there at the age of fourteen, was graduated in 1826, and studied philosophy and theology during four years in the seminary at Bardstown. In 1830 he entered the Propaganda, Rome, and received the doctorate in theology at the close of a public defence of 256 theses. Upon his return to Bardstown, he became pastor of the cathedral and editor of the Catholic Advocate, which was founded in 1835.

On April 18, 1848, he was appointed the Coadjutor Bishop of Louisville, Kentucky. On September 10, 1848 he was ordained a bishop.

On February 11, 1850 he became the Bishop of Louisville. After the transfer of the see to Louisville, he was appointed vicar-general (1844), coadjutor cum jure to Bishop Flaget (1848), and Bishop of Louisville (1850). The diocese, which then numbered over 30,000 Catholics, was well provided with schools for girls, but there were comparatively few schools for boys. To supply this need and recruit for the clergy, Bishop Spalding, shortly after the dedication of the cathedral in 1852, went to Europe and secured the services of the Xaverian Brothers who came to Louisville in 1854.

Bishop Spalding was appointed the Archbishop of Baltimore on May 3, 1864. He was installed as the Bishop of Maryland on July 31, 1864. He died on February 7, 1872 in Baltimore, Maryland, aged 61.
