Martin I. Townsend

Martin Ingham Townsend (February 6, 1810 - March 8, 1903) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born in Hancock, Massachusetts, Townsend moved with his parents to Williamstown, Mass, in 1816. He attended the common schools, and was graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1833. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced practice in Troy, New York. He served as district attorney of Rensselaer County 1842-1845. He served as delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1867 and 1868. Regent of New York University 1873-1903.

Townsend was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1879). He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1878. United States district attorney for the northern district of New York 1879-1887. He served as member of the State constitutional convention in 1890. He retired from legal practice in 1901. He died in Troy, New York, March 8, 1903. He was interred in Oakwood Cemetery.
