Martin How
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Martin How is a Scottish composer and organist. Born in Glasgow, the son of the Most Reverend J C H How, Primus of the Episcopal Church, he won a music scholarship to Repton School, and then went on to read music and theology at Clare College, Cambridge where he held the Organ Scholarship. After National Service, he was Director of Music at the 13th century Grimsby Parish Church. However, most of his career has been dedicated to the Royal School of Church Music, especially in the field of choir training and development.
He has written a large amount of church music, ranging from simple mass settings and anthems amenable to choirs of very limited resources, to works which are much more technically demanding. His compositional style is characterised by facile and 'catchy' melodic lines supported by pungent harmony.
Martin currently spends most of his time writing choral and organ music, as well as being one of the organists at Croydon Parish Church. Some of his compositions are available on his website.
