Martin Glider
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Designed and built by William H. Martin [1](a native of Canton, Ohio) in 1908, the Martin Glider[2] was one of the earliest mono-wing designs in aviation. On January 12, 1909, the glider made its first flight reaching a height of approximately 20 feet and at an air speed of 20 miles per hour. Because Martin's wife Almina weighed less than he, she became the glider's first pilot. Eventually, the glider logged more than 100 successful flights.
The glider is currently on display at the MAPS Air Museum at the Akron-Canton Airport in North Canton, Ohio. [3]
