Marske United F.C. is an English football club based in Marske-by-the-Sea, near Redcar, Redcar and Cleveland. The club formed in 1956[1] and continued on today. They currently play in the Northern League Division Two.

[edit] History

Marske United F.C. played in the local Leagues until their entry into the Teesside League in 1976. Marske won two titles as well as a number of Cup Competitions during their time in the Teesside League, the second of their titles gaining them promotion to the Wearside League via the Non-League Pyramid system in 1985.

As well as league glory, Marske were becoming a major force in local Non-League football enjoying a fair amount of success in the North Riding, County and Senior Cup Competitions. Marske were soon in the hunt for honours in the Wearside League. During their time in the Wearside League, Marske won the League Title once, were Runner's-Up on numerous occasions and won so many Cup competitions that it became obvious the Club was ready once more to progress.

In fact, the 1995/96 season saw Marske United achieve a remarkable clean sweep of Wearside League Silverware. The League Title, The League Cup, The Sunderland Shipowners Cup and the Monkwearmouth Cup all took up residence in the Marske United Clubhouse. Marske had also, in the previous season, added their name to the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time, etching them alongside a glittering array of footballing talent.

Marske made their entry into the Northern League in the Second Division for the 1997/98 season and duly gained promotion that same season. Marske had ridden a rollercoaster ride from the Wearside League to the First Division of the Northern League and their first season in that Division was one of consolidation, settling into this new environment ended with a twelfth place finish, again something of an achievement. Better still was to follow, fourth place and a NRCF A Senior Cup Semi-Final appearance suggested further improvement.

The third season saw Marske reach new heights, finishing 3rd in the Northern League Division 1. A run in the FA Vase saw the attendance record broken, as 1359 fans witnessed Marske's FA Vase Quarter Final tie against Bedlington Terriers.

The fourth season in the First Division started with Marske's main sponsor, Amott Insurance, withdrawing their support and the resignation of manager Charlie Bell. Mike Hodgson & Peter Bell stepped into the breach and guided the Club to fourth in the League but the cracks were beginning to show as more and more of the team were being lured away.

2003/04 brought a new look team, a new major sponsor in the shape of Car Care of Marske and a fresh wave of optimism. Things unfortunately did not go as planned, the new team never gelled the way everyone had hoped and things went from bad to worse as Marske spiralled its way towards the Second Division.

After much behind the scenes work Darren Trotter was appointed. A young manager just starting out in terms of the Northern League, he had just served apprenticeship coaching at Hartlepool United F.C. Academy where he gained his UEFA Coaching Badges. His first season in charge was to prove ultimately unsuccessful, as the club finished 15th in the league, their worst Northern League performance to date.

In the 2005/2006 season, after a poor start to the season, former management duo Charlie Bell and Steve Dowling were brought back to the club. The rejuvenated Marske finished the season in good form, managing to grab 10th spot in the process.

The 2006/2007 saw an upheaval in playing staff, with several ex-players from the First Division years rejoining, as well as a plethora of new players. The season started brightly, as Marske soon found themselves on an FA Cup run, memorably defeating Unibond sides Harrogate RA and Brigg Town on the way. The team continued their good form in the league, going on a 16 game unbeaten run before having it ended by promotion rivals Seaham Red Star. The end of the season saw a dip in form for Marske, and despite being strong promotion contenders, 5th place was all they could manage, as another season of Second Division football awaits them.
