In 2007, the boys soccer team made it to the state championship. As for the football team, though they unfortunately lost in the playoffs, there were several players of notable merit, including one Bill Bair. A senior for the 2007 season, Bair became the most valuable Planet player with 35 touchdowns, and he went on to become a WPIAL record-setter by rushing for 2,287 yards in a single season. The girls swim team also had a successful season with four of their swimmers qualifying for the PIAA Championship. Rachel Szymkowiak, Chloe Pierre, Courtney Shields, and Gabri Pierre, respectively, placed 5th in the girls 200yd Medley Relay, setting a new school record. Szymkowiak also finsished 8th in the girls 100 yard butterfly.[citation needed]

All outdoor sports are played at the Mars Athletic Complex behind the Mars Area Middle School. Football and soccer games are played at Planet Stadium which is part of the complex. For many years, the Pine-Richland Rams of the nearby Pine-Richland School District have been Mars' rival at sporting events however, as Mars is now AAA and Pine Richland is now AAAA, this rivalry has died down.

[edit] Mars Arts

[edit] Art

Art displays/exhibitions occur year round in Mars High School. These displays include photography, drawings, paintings, self portraits, and sculptures. The Annual Coffeehouse Art Exhibit takes place at the beginning of May each year, featuring portfolios of all arts students, as Mars does not discriminate between regular and advanced classes.

[edit] Band

The band course contains both a fall/winter marching band section and a latter year ensemble experience. This past year, in 2007, the Mars band performed to the theme of Moulin Rouge. They are well known among the AA school districts for impeccable performances and compositions notable of higher schools, such as AAAA Pine Richland.

[edit] Other

There has been some controversies within the school. The ongoing battles include the bag checks in the morning (where students must give their bags to authorities and have them search it), metal detectors, as well as the no cell phone policy. In the 2007-2008 school year, there was a controversy regarding a sophmore student sent to ISS for telling a student to be quiet during the test. Students protested by wearing T-shirts that asked the administartion to free this student. This protest was suppressed, as the next day, administrators placed them in ISS as well.
