[edit] Overview
Marlon first appeared on Emmerdale in 1996 as the nephew of Zak Dingle. He arrived in a red sports car and later brought his dad Albert to the village. Marlon supported his uncle Zak through his testicular cancer and is good friends with Paddy Kirk. In 1997, Marlon started working for Kathy Glover's establishment, which was her tearooms during the day, and Eric and Dee Pollard's wine bar at night, which is when he first showed his cooking skills. When their marriage broke up, Eric went into a deep despair and put Marlon in charge of his business. The ambitious chef was overwhelmed to be given such a huge responsibility and grabbed his opportunity with both hands – even though the Dingles tried to take advantage of his good will by regularly dropping in for free food. However, Marlon's reign as the culinary king of Emmerdale was cut short when Kathy hired hunky Carlos Diaz to work at the diner too. But Marlon was getting his feet well and truly under the table at the Woolpack anyway. Bernice Blackstock had been deeply impressed by Marlon's cooking and let him do various nights there. The duo even shared a cheeky snog one night! But while his kiss with Bernice led to nothing, Marlon would find true love at the Woolpack.
[edit] Relationship with Tricia Stokes
New barmaid Tricia Stokes, a dappy girl with a heart of gold, began flirting with Marlon. After a few months of misunderstandings, the couple finally got together and went on holiday to Spain to celebrate the fact.
Their relationship was severely tested when Tricia agreed to marry her good friend Jason Kirk's boyfriend Joe Fisher so he would be allowed to remain in the country. Although she had been offered a lot of money to do it, Marlon was shocked that she would even consider this and they nearly broke up.
Just before the wedding, they reconciled and Tricia did her bit for Marlon's new business Chez Marlon by giving him the money as a business investment. Sadly the business failed and Tricia left Marlon after just a few months. After spending ages trying to find her, Marlon decided to move on and began dating locum vet Rhona Goskirk. However, Marlon's world was turned upside down when Tricia returned and they decided to get married. But when the big day came, Tricia hurt her neck and had to wear a collar. She was so upset that she called off the wedding and their friends Paddy and Emily got married instead.
[edit] Relationship with Charity Tate
However, Marlon and Tricia did eventually get down the aisle. But just a few months after they tied the knot, Tricia was offered the chance to star in a Bollywood film and went to India for six months. While she was away Marlon was dreadfully lonely and had a drunken one night stand with his cousin Charity.
[edit] Trica Stokes' death
When Tricia returned, the secret came out and she left Marlon. His desperate attempts to win her back appeared to fail, until it seemed Tricia was willing to forgive after reading a romantic list of characteristics written about her, by Marlon. On New Year's Eve 2003, Tricia was tragically killed during a storm which resulted in part of the Woolpack's roof collapsing on top of her. The grief suffered by Marlon was prolonged close to a year until he developed a friendly relationship with Donna Windsor. It was thanks to Donna's kind heart that Marlon moved on from his loss.
[edit] Relationship with Donna Windsor
Although he rebuffed her early attempts to snare him early in the year, Donna Windsor proved she was the woman for Marlon when she helped him take care of his cousin Lilith's four children that she unexpectedly dumped on him. A relationship started to develop somewhat more than just friendly.
It didn't take Marlon long to fall madly in love with Donna and she with him. When he proposed to her – en route to a chef's competition in Newcastle, Donna said yes and it looked like there was a happy ending in sight. However, being so young, marriage was a big thing for Donna to consider. She'd also recently become close to hunky Max King and his tragic death left her absolutely devastated.
[edit] Trica's ghost?
A short while before their wedding, Marlon started having nightmares about Tricia. This was made worse when Donna tried on Tricia's wedding dress and was caught by Marlon, who momentarily thought Tricia had come back as a ghost. Donna explained that she felt like she was always being compared to Tricia.
[edit] Donna's relationship with Max King?
On the morning of the wedding Donna decided to confide in Marlon that she was in love with Max while they were together. Heartbroken by her admission that she loved Max, Marlon wondered whether or not it was a good idea to get married after all. But his love for Donna won over and they ended up tying the knot. It was a good decision and they returned from honeymoon even stronger as a couple than before.
[edit] House-hunting
Having spent their first few months of marriage sharing a house with Marlon's friend Paddy Kirk and Toni Daggert, Donna and Marlon were desperate to get on the property ladder.
But the prices at King & Son's new development were far too steep for them to consider. Knowing her daughter was desperate to get a place of her own, Donna's mum Viv has offered the couple money for their deposit – in exchange for Donna's womb.
When Marlon and Donna 'won' the raffle for the Kings Showhome, Donna decided to become a surrogate for Viv and Bob so she could get the money to pay for the deposit of their new home. Marlon was none too pleased but eventually decided to go along with it. With the Showhome collapse on 13th July 2006, Marlon and Donna's dream of owning their own property was shattered. Donna returned the money given to her by her mother upon discovery that Viv was pregnant herself.
Donna had a major run in with Marlon's family when she reported Shadrach to the police for theft. Called up before the Dingle Court, Donna defied Zak and Lisa and revealed she planned to become a police officer. Marlon backed her up and they stand strong together.
Marlon and Donna lived in a small caravan outside Wishing well cottage, they were building an "Eco Home" but reallised the ground they were building on was bought by Matthew King.
[edit] Woolpack robbery
In October 2006 , two men who were looking for Marlon's brother Eli and they broke into the Woolpack to get Marlon to tell them were Eli was although Marlon didn't know. The pair wrecked the pub, beat up Marlon and stole thousands of pounds from the till. The men were later arrested after Eli framed them for firearm possession.
[edit] Dingle cousins
In December, Marlon and Donna were left with the uneasy looking after Marlon's cousin Lillith's four children Luke, Matthew, Mark and Jon, who is a girl despite her name, following Lilith's arrest for armed robbery. This didn't work out and Marlon ultimately decided the children should with their uncle because he and Donna's living arrangements weren't adequate. Donna was very upset with Marlon for a while. The children returned after running away from their uncle. Marlon could see how miserable they were and decided they should all run away from the village.
Marlon and Donna had to say goodbye to the children once again when they were taken to separate foster homes, following several formalities with the police and the children's social worker.
Marlon and Donna were devastated when they saw that the room they'd prepared for the kids was going up in flames. When the finger of blame was pointed at Val, Donna hurled insults towards her. But Val gave as good as she got and accused Donna of being "a schoolgirl Hitler with poor fashion sense!" Donna lashed out at Val but was held down by Marlon.
Donna and Marlon then turned up for their final meeting with social services and were glowing with pride as Mrs Jenkins said they'd a very positive report. However, just as it was all going swimmingly, Marlon let slip that the back room of the pub had been damaged by fire. The social worker looked into it before breaking the bad news: they wouldn't get the kids until they had more suitable accommodation sorted
[edit] Feuding with Val Lambert
Marlon and Donna were devastated when they saw that the room they'd prepared for the kids was going up in flames. When the finger of blame was pointed at Val, Donna hurled insults towards her. But Val gave as good as she got and accused Donna of being "a schoolgirl Hitler with poor fashion sense!" Donna lashed out at Val but was held down by Marlon.
However, Zak also realised the couple badly needed his help and he offered to lend a hand, in only the way Zak can. He offered Marlon and Donna use of a caravan, for which they were very grateful… Until they saw it, that is! The caravan was on its last legs and hardly fit for human habitation. Donna felt as if her world was crashing down around her, but Marlon declared sweetly, “I'd live in a pig sty if it meant I could live with you.”
[edit] Betting slip
Marlon, in an effort to improve his and his wife's financial problems, placed his and Donna's savings on a race, resulting in him winning £18,000. When the bookie ate Marlon's betting slip and refused to pay up, Marlon hatched a plan with brother Eli to get his winnings from the crooked bookie.
[edit] Marlon's revenge
Just before Eli was about to go into the bookie's Marlon found a gun on him and learned that his brother was going to carry out an armed robbery. Marlon was in shock but relented and let his brother go ahead with the plan. Eli was nearly successful with the robbery when a customer came in and a fight ensued. Marlon, who had been waiting in the car, got frustrated and went inside the bookie's to find Eli struggling with the customer.
[edit] Marlon's shooting
Pretending not to know him, Marlon yelled at his brother to leave but he wouldn't. Marlon went to grab the gun from Eli, as did the customer, only for the gun to go off accidentally and shoot Marlon in the chest, above his heart. Marlon collapsed to the floor telling Eli to go away, leaving the customer to ring the police.
Marlon was rushed to hospital and made a full recovery. However Donna found out about Marlon being involved in the robbery and although she was very angry with him they are still together. However Eli is blackmailing the couple and it seems that Donna is about to do a deal with him and use her position in the police force to allow him to break into a warehouse.
[edit] The Woolpack: Pub of the Year?
In 2008, The Woolpack was entered in a magazine Pub of the Year competition. Val bribed Jasmine Thomas to tell her when the judge was coming. The Woolpack went into frantics.
[edit] The Next Round
Unbelievably, the pub discovered they made it to the finals. Anthony Worall Thompson was discovered to be the celebrity judge. This coincided with Val's surprise wedding to Eric Pollard.
