Marked (2007) is a vampyre story written by P. C. Cast & Kristin Cast. Plot Intro
The book “Marked” is part of the House of Night series that is written by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. The book is much like our world except they have vampires (which are called vampyres in the book). In the book, the main character Zoey Redbird gets marked as a fledging for vampyres. You get marked when you’re a teenager, you aren’t born with it. She got marked at school with her bestfriend, Kayla as a witness. After that her best friend got scared and left. Zoey went into the bathroom after she got marked scared of what people would do. After a long while she walked out of the bathroom making sure her hair was covering her mark when she ran into her ex-boyfriend, Heath. Heath was outside with his friends when he realized Zoey had the mark. His friends told Zoey she was a freak and to leave Heath alone.
When she gets home she tries to talk her mom into not telling her stepfather (which she calls her “Steploser”). That doesn't work and her mother calls her stepfather right away. Zoey’s mom and stepfather are against this very much considering the stepfather is an elder of the “People of Faith”. The People of Faith are a group of god fearing people who believe if you don’t think their way then you're wrong. They are also strongly against vampyres. When Zoey’s parents forbid her to leave their home to go to the House of Night School, she sneaks out to her grandmother’s lavender farm. There she slips and falls and hits her head on a rock which knocks her unconscious.
During that time she was able to talk to the vampyre goddess Nyx. Nyx talked to Zoey and told Zoey she would be the eyes and ears for Nyx in the modern world and she would be Nyx’s first true U-we-tsi a-ge-hu-tsa v-hna-I Sv-no-yi Daughter of Night. Then Nyx kisses her on the head and she passes out in her dream. When she wakes up, her mark is filled in which is very unusual considering only vampyres get a filled in Mark and she was at the House of Night. Her grandma Sylvia Redbird brings her there when she finds Zoey unconscious. Neferet, the House of Night School high priestess tells Zoey’s grandmother she’d be Zoey’s mentor. Every fledging in the House of Night has an adult vampyre mentor. After awhile of talking they ask Zoey why she had a filled in mark. Zoey is not keen on discussing this fact, and tries tochange the subject. Neferet took Zoey on a tour of the school when Zoey’s grandmother left. During the middle of the tour Neferet gets a phone call and she leaves Zoey alone for a little while.
While Zoey is alone she sees a scene between a beautiful blonde, which she finds out later was named Aphrodite, and a guy who looks a lot like Superman, whose name is discovered later to be Erik Night. She runs away when she realizes that Erik saw her eavesdropping. She meets up with Neferet and Neferet shows her to the dorm where Zoey sees Aphrodite again. Aphrodite offers to take Zoey up to her dorm room and after a little hesitation Neferet thought it was a good idea. When Aphrodite and Zoey go up the stairs Aphrodite tells Zoey the only reason the school was cool was because of her and she was the “it” girl and not to mess with her. When they got to Zoey’s room Zoey’s roommate Stevie Rae answers the door perkily but when she sees Aphrodite she turns pale. Zoey quickly stepps in the room and closes the door on Aphrodite.
They get to know each other and then they quickly go down to the cafeteria to go eat lunch. Stevie Rae introduces Zoey to the “twins” Erin Bates and Shaunee Cole. They aren’t twins by their looks considering Erin is a white girl and Shaunee is African American. They are psychologically linked though; they finish each others sentences and have the same thoughts. Then there’s Damien, the group's gay guy. He’s not like other girly kind of guys. Damien taught Zoey a bit about the school. Zoey learned about the Dark Daughters. The Dark daughters are the ‘in’ crowd in the school. They are the cheerleaders of a normal high school. There are also the Dark Sons which are the football players of a normal high school. Aphrodite is the leader of the Dark Sons and Daughters. While they talk about Aphrodite, Aphrodite comes up to Zoey and the gang and invites Zoey to the Dark Daughter ritual and to join. Zoey accepts considering she had no other choice because Neferet okayed it.
After that little scene Stevie Rae takes Zoey back to the room so they could sleep. When they wake up, Zoey goes to her classes and then goes to a Full Moon Ritual, which happens every month to honor Nyx. When Neferet invokes all the elements Zoey can feel all of them which are unusual because there hadn’t been and Vampyre in history that could do that. After the school’s Full Moon Ritual, The Dark Daughters and Sons had one. During the Dark Daughters and Sons ritual Zoey sees Erik and they talk. At the end of the ritual a cup of wine is passed around just like in the School wide Full moon Ritual but this time the wine is laced with blood. Zoey finds out after the ritual was over and she runs off.
She sees a cat on the wall. There Nala and Zoey see a ghost of a girl named Elizabeth who died as a fledging because her body rejected the change. Elizabeth shrieks and runs off which scares Zoey, but Zoey does not have time to be scared because her best friend and ex-boyfriend come to visit her. During that little episode Zoey figures out her bestfriend liked her ex-boyfriend and she sucked her boyfriend’s blood. When they left she sits by a tree and cries until Erik comes up. Zoey figures Erik saw that whole episode and he did. They talk about stuff and Erik tells Zoey bloodlust starts when you’re a sixth former, Zoey’s only a third former. Erik walks Zoey back to her dorm. When Zoey gets to her room she tells Stevie Rae everything except the blood part.
In the morning/night when Stevie Rae and Zoey wake up and gp down for breakfest. Aphrodite talks to Zoey and Zoey decides to join the Dark daughters. Aphrodite tells Zoey the next ritual will be the follwing day. After that Zoey goes to talk to Neferet about the bloodlust and Heath and Kayla. Neferet gives Zoey a Sociology 415 book but does not pull her out of her class because Zoey does not want to be different and attract more attention than she already had.
At the ritual the Dark Daughters and Sons sneak out to the Philbrook Museum and have a ritual there. Aphrodite summons evil spirits and Heath, Zoey’s ex and her friends show up unexpectedly. The spirits go and attack Heath because he is a human and Erik helps Heath fight them off. Zoey then reaches within herself and connected with her goddess given powers to banish the spirits. Zoey’s mark had been added to when it was all over. She has tattoos only a Vampyre would have. Then Neferet comes out of the bushes announcing she was there the whole time and removed Aphrodite from High Priestess in training and from being the leader of the Dark Daughters. Those privileges are then given to Zoey. Zoey and her friends go back to the dorm and that’s when the book ends.
