As of 2001 India census[2], Markapur had a population of 58,454. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Markapur has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 52%. In Markapur, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The place has abundant resources of slate mines. The city has lots of slate factories giving employment to many workers. The slates manufactured here are exported to many other states and throughout the world.

Bus : The city has APSRTC bus station near pula Subbaiah Colony. There are frequent buses to district capital Ongole. People who wants to visit Srisailam (Famous Shiva Temple-Jyothirlingam) can get down at Markapur and reach Srisailam by bus from this town. The bus frequency to Hyderabad is also great.
Trains : Railway station ( Markapur Road ) is situated 4 km away from city centre. There will be bus shuttles between city to railway station as per the train timings. The railway line from Vizag to Bangalore passes through this station. Vijayawada-Vasco Da Gama Express, Prasanthi Express, Amaravati Express, Guntur-Guntakal Passenger, Yesvantpur-Guntur Passenger and Guntur-Hubli Passenger are the main trains that pass through this station.

Chenna kesava swamy temple is the main attraction for tourists visiting this town/city. The temple Gopuram is very tall and can be seen from 5 km away from the city. It is an architectural wonder that we can watch the Sun rays falling directly from the Gopuram on to the main deity of Chennakesava in the month of December every year. Those who see this wonder will have no option except to praise the engineering skills exhibited by the Architects of Krishna Devaraya period during which it was constructed. - DVS Subrahmanyam (An old student of Vasavi Kanyakaparameswari college - 1969)
