Mark Stephen Meadows

Mark Stephen Meadows is an American artist, author, and engineer. He develops games, AI software, and interactive portraits. He has founded three companies, written four books, is the co-inventor of several US patents relating to artificial intelligence and avatars, and he lectures internationally on this work.[1][2][3][4][5]

Meadows is also known for his hitchhiking adventures,[6] specifically for visiting Baghdad in 2003, and his travels in Sri Lanka, where he interviewed terrorists, in 2004. He holds a USCG 100-ton captain's license. He and his wife live on their sailboat, in the Pacific Ocean, and in Paris, France.

Since 1987, Meadows has been selling his artwork to galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe. He has received awards from Ars Electronica,[7] the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the National Information Infrastructure (NII) highest honors, among others. His 3D animation and interactive design has been utilized by such companies as LucasArts, Sony Pictures, and Microsoft.

In the past 13 years, Mark has worked as an artist at Xerox-PARC, a Creative Director for a Stanford Research Institute venture, and a CCO and co-founder of a VR and Internet company called Construct. He has spent time in the Waag Society in Holland as an artist/researcher, consulted for dozens of companies, and in 1993 helped design WELL.com. Mark also developed the first open-protocol 3D multi-user environment in 1995.[8] In 2006 he founded HeadCase Humanufacturing, and in 2007 he founded Echo & Shadow - both companies that develop forms of artificial intelligence and natural language processing tools. Mark also appears as a guest speaker at many universities, sharing his knowledge about interactive narrative and artificial intelligence.

Meadows first book concerns narrative, visual art and video games and is entitled, "Pause & Effect."[9] His second book, "I, Avatar"[10] is a first-person travelogue of Second Life and an examination of the culture and consequences of using avatars in virtual worlds. Meadows' current works are a travelogue of Iraq, a book of illustrated fables, and a book on Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Emotion and robots. Meadows is represented by Launch Books. [11]

Mark Meadows completed his bachelor's degree in math, philosophy, and literature from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also attended courses at The San Francisco Art Institute (painting and photography), University of Colorado (philosophy), Harvard University (biology), and Bemis Art School (painting).
